So do the people that are deriding the show actually watch it? Or is it all on reputation and hearsay? I would figure most of the people who watch this show know what they are in for. Otherwise it is the same as people being offended by Billy Connelly's foul language or Jimmy Carr's off-colour jokes. As far as the politics of the show go, people obviously haven't seen him go after the Ministers of Health, Social Development, Immigration and Defence of recent times. At least he makes no bones about where his politics lie. Unlike any number of so-called political reporters employed by both news channels.

I'm happy to admit I'm one of the 30-50 000 that watches the show. In fact I haven't watched the one on One since he started just over a year ago. Probably to do with age and gender, but the advertisers would do well to note the disposable income as well.

To address the OP's question, Jim could probably handle the sports interviews, but the guests aren't really there for a technical discussion. More a case of interviewing the personality.
Look at the tech segments. Nothing too deep, just interesting and entertaining.
Ingrid is warming to her role. Give her a chance to get comfortable. We have often commented that Paul would not be the easiest workmate but the job certainly wouldn't be dull. Their biggest challenge would be to not be led into saying something that Paul Henry will get away with, that they won't.

I used to listen to him on RadioLive and always found him quite engaging, although I was often irritated when he would say something not particularly funny and then roar with laughter at himself.

I've tended to listen to RadioNZ more since Mark Weldon started tearing apart Mediaworks causing a lot of their good talent to run for the exits.

I have seen snippets of Henry a few times and I absolutely cannot abide him. He is not ignorant or a fool, just an opinionated, self-important, unpleasant, uninteresting little man without much to say of any depth or merit.

I think that's very unfair, you need to see more than snippets before you can make a judgment. To front any TV news show you need to be very confident in your abilities, have a great sense of humour, think outside the box, and have a very good overall knowledge of what's going on in the world. I think Paul ticks these boxes very well...he puts in a huge amount of energy to entertain us! I just wonder whether he needs to spread the load a bit more as I said earlier because it must be incredibly demanding to put in such energy for 3 hours or so!

The only thing in favor of the Paul Henry show - at least on the radio - is that in Auckland you get good traffic news which is helpful on the drive to work.

I generally listen to it until I get the first traffic report and then switch over to another station.

On mornings when PH is at his worst, I give up on the traffic reports and switch. I also switch away when they run those subluxation adverts. I understand that a commercial broadcaster must run ads but why would you choose to run ads that are so irritating that customers switch off?

When Marcus Lush was doing the show, I would listen for my whole drive to work - often even putting up with the subluxation stuff.

So, for my part, the best way to improve the show would be to ditch Paul Henry and scrap the bottom feeder adverts.

Not a Paul Henry fan, tbh but I have listened in from time to time. I must confess I do get annoyed when he goes on and on and on...and the news is late as a result. I don't want to hear your blather, Paul - the news is meant to start at 7:30, not 7:35 while you're going on and on about whatever. I liked Marcus Lush, at least he kept his show to a tight format.

TBH I'm not sure he is a racist either. On occasions he can be rude about anyone regardless of race, creed or colour.

I would say exactly the same about Duncan Garner. Boy is he a giant douche who does nothing but ludicrously opinionated and ill-educated sound bites just to get his listeners riled up so they can phone in and agree with each other.

No argument there, except I have seen Duncan Garner in other contexts (The Vote comes to mind) and then he was bright, witty, informed and spot on. Maybe the same can be said for Henry, but I don't think so.

The problem is the terrible format Duncan Garner has been forced to fit into. Story is an appalling, contrived, dumbed down invention of TV3 and I can't stand it, either. I feel sorry for Garner but he needs to feed his family and I think he is trying to make the best of it, but the sooner Story is canned, the better. It is one of the stupider ideas to make it to screen in this country, and that is saying something.

So some people don't like Duncan Garner or Paul Henry so what about Mike Hosking does he rank any better?

They all do the same thing which is to keep you up to date with current events so is too much attention given to the presenters who are just doing their jobs as best as they can?

Yes. Replace Paul Henry with Jeremy Clarkson.
