I would put zero trust in a story from a retailer blaming a distributor for the problem.

Yet another reason why the whole importer->distributor->retailer model sucks compared to one place doing the whole lot. Just blame each other for problems like this.

In any case notify the seller that you are rejecting the goods and to arrange collection of them. Not at your time or expense.

Indeed, confirmed not new. And as other people suggested, it's hard to imagine a supplier making that mistake.

Something I just realized, was that I'd emailed them a prepaid Courier Post ticket to use (I have an account with Courier Post) and it arrived to me using that ticket. I'd be shocked if a supplier would have accepted that, printed it on A4 paper and stuck it to a box for shipping (which was actually an old box used once for a laptop or something - I can still make out Ingram Micro's address on it).

Which would mean, if Jimmy Shao there (it appears to be a one man business) sent it out using my provided courier ticket, it's extremely unlikely he would have missed the remains of a torn off yellow sticker across the front of the box and such. I suspect he had it in stock, and that it didn't come straight from a supplier.

The plot thickens, LOL!

I find this quite interesting to discover more about now :)

So I now know that the parcel was picked up by a Courier Post driver (have his driver number but no need to post that) whose run is between Mayoral Drive, Auckland to Wellesley Street East, Auckland - which according to Courier Post, includes picking up from 31 to 106 Cook Street. The Xtreme System shop is 1/88 Cook Street.

I'd love to know more about this "supplier" who supposedly used the card to test a customers computer with a RAM issue, then put it in the wrong box, and sent it to me... the supplier that must be based within the few streets around the Xtreme System shop on Cook Street. lol!

Good question, according to Asus the other day, it doesn't appear so no, and it is a New Zealand unit.

Disclaimer: I have no way of verifying whether this information is true. But I previously read an allegation by a user on GPforums (which is currently down) that he supposedly bought an item from this shop, which was advertised as new, that he subsequently discovered to have originated from a Greys auction. If that is true, there may or may not be a pattern.

Thanks! I see the post now, about the same store and guy Jimmy Shao. Interesting to see they filed a complaint with the commerce commission. I'll wait and see what I get back as a response next week, but could be filing a complaint with them also.

IMO, you should file a complaint. Just beware that the CC Fair Trading people tend to be pretty lenient and very often only warn shops for even quite egregious things. But there seems to be a pattern here and your detective work suggests there is more than an element of untruth even after the shop was caught out. If you decide to complain, be sure to let them know that someone had already complained about this shop before for something similar.

IMO, you should file a complaint. Just beware that the CC Fair Trading people tend to be pretty lenient and very often only warn shops for even quite egregious things. But there seems to be a pattern here and your detective work suggests there is more than an element of untruth even after the shop was caught out. If you decide to complain, be sure to let them know that someone had already complained about this shop before for something similar.

Agreed, there might be a pattern forming. I've messaged the person on gpforums who issued a complaint, to get his reference number, so I can include that in my complaint. Who knows, there might have been more complaints in the past too.

I'd suggest to the commerce commission that they ask for an invoice for the graphics card Xtreme System purchased from their supplier, and based on what I've found, if I had to guess I'd say either they won't be able to produce an invoice, or if they do, it'll be older than last week, and if contacted I bet the supplier will not backup the story of supplying one they'd used to test a customers computer for RAM, put in the wrong box, then sending it to Xtreme Systems who sent it to me without looking at the box (since the parcel came from their store).

On a personal note, thanks for raising this. I WAS going to buy a gaming mouse from these guys even despite what I read on Gpforums. But I am just not liking what I am seeing in terms of the pattern and have no wish to support a company like this.

Not sure if it was discussed earlier, but have you though about contacting their supplier direct to see if their side corresponds with the retailers. IMO you do have to give people the benefit of the doubt that they wht they are telling you is correct. But the supplier should also put their side to the story.
