PhantomNVD: But I could add whatever to your post before resenting and how would you prove it wasn't true?

I think if this becomes a problem, we'd need a way to add a moderator/BDFL to have 'read' access to the PM directly to ensure nobody 'tweaks' the message before sending it?

For E.g. you and tdgeek often rumble in threads so he just 'forwards' a post you sent after 'fixing' it and gets you banned (not saying he would! Just for example) what way could you have to prove YOUR copy that you forward wasn't the 'tweaked' version anyway?

We certainly do have our disagreements and sometimes they are quite heated but I believe and assume that long-standing Geekzone members have a certain integrity and credibility and I am inclined to trust them, however strong our disagreements. I honestly do not believe any Geekzoner with any history here would do such a thing and I am prepared to take that risk.

We currently don't have a Forward option for PMs. I can read PMs if I run a query on the database. Our moderators do not have access to anything that is not on the web platform and since they can't see the database they don't have any way to see messages.

A PM report would be something to consider.

Cool, thanks. I don't imagine that there are terribly many dodgy/spammy private messages sent on here, but it would be good to have a way of reporting them if it occurs.

As I bolded above, I was just an example and I'm equally happy for our BDFL to have easy access to any and all my PMs to resolve such an issue if needed. Trust is earned and, as you say, after 1000 posts or a year on here, it's rather unlikely! ;)

On the forum software I one-time worked developing, if "report" was selected on a PM, the PM content became available to moderators in the report center (sic). Assuming you don't have a report centre function, it could just forward the text to the moderator in the report however it's displayed.

We don't have a report centre. The way it works when a post is reported: an email is sent to all mods with a link to the post. At the same time a record is created against the post and against the account. If we clear the report the account is clean, if we close the report the account will show a "User reported" from now on, including the number of reported cases that we "closed" not "cleared". We can then look at the account Moderator Notes where these reports will show up alongside any notes mods put in there.

I can add a report PM to that system and make it available to Mods in notes.
