MikeB4: Yet there are many who do not believe that climate change is happening despite the evidence outside.

This argument is like arguing to a religious person that god does not exist.

Some evolutionary flaw in the human brain. Maybe in the days of monsters in the dark it was a good flaw, but not today.

That Herald report is total BS as usual.

The two photos are supposed to be a 'then' and 'now' comparison.

But, they are not comparable at all.

They are clearly taken in different wavelengths.

Here is a comparison to the first picture taken a year ago (01-Jul-2015).

There are certainly a few sunspots. But, the difference is not nearly as dramatic as the the Herald would have you believe.

I saw that, yes. The two photos aren't taken the same way at all and can't be compared by for the shape (square-ish).

The report was drivel.

Talking of 50 years, I read once that if a change was made to the weather inputs, such as banning fossil fuels, it would take 50 years for the earth to stabilise. Now, take the tipping point, where changes we make to fix global warming are too late, as the cycle is feeding itself in runaway warming? Ice melts as sea warms, less ice to reflect sunlight, adds more heat from the sun, oceans warm more, ice melts more, the great water tunnel slows down. Unsure when they say the tipping point is,but its a potentially sad story.

Some scientists see a temperature rise of 1.5°C (since 1880) as being a tipping point. A far larger number of scientists agree that 2°C of warming is a very likely threshold after which we will lose control and the changes will become a chain reaction.

We are currently just over 1.5°C of warming. The level of CO2 is now over 400ppm (parts per million) year-round. There is a significant lag in heating as CO2 levels rise. At the same time, CO2 stays in the atmosphere for about 1,000 years once released.....so the key is to prevent it being released.

At 400ppm, in the distant past (we haven't had 400ppm or higher for over 23 million years....but we are there now) the northern Atlantic (ice again) was 3.5°C to 5°C warmer than now....on average.

So what?

Changes like that will affect weather...and places that can now grow food may find they don't get enough rainfall or are too hot....or may not be able to grow ENOUGH food for the billions who currently live there.

If we were a scatterred 500 million around the planet, we could all probably just shift to a better place. But we now well over 7 billion...and heading to 9 billion...and small changes in climate can see millions starve. Look at what just happened in Europe and the UK in particular when large numbers of people started moving around. It won't be easy. Some see Syria as a climate change war as they have now experienced drought that breaks all known records....contributing to the conflict now underway.

The bottom line is that we're still pumping out CO2. We will certainly hit 450ppm of CO2 unless urgent action is taken.....but very few are taking any action at all, never mind anything urgent. Lots of talk and promises shouldn't be mitaken for actual action. if anything, China is now leading the way on renewable energy and electric cars and many other solutions. It's the West (us) dragging its arse.

Here in NZ the foreign-owned corporate media tend to avoid stories about climate change, while Radio NZ report on it regularly and in detail with analysis. But overall, this partial media blackout here means people in NZ don't really see it as a problem....and therefore the government can get away with doing pretty much nothing at all about it.

It's a sad thing, really.

Here is how the CBC - Canada's public broadcaster - looks at 2C of warming. Our own TVNZ is silent on this as our government tore up the public broadcasting charter in 2011 so TVNZ's job now is just to make money....not inform us about anything useful....

Crazy thought: I wonder if it's a possibility that the conditions on Venus could have been caused by a technological race of beings that destroyed their planet via greenhouse gas emissions?

While Mercury is very close to the sun, Venus is the hottest planet, due solely to greenhouse gases. Mind boggling

Venus is like that because of planetary chemistry. It just has orders of magnitude more gas in its atmosphere than we do.

Venus has little in the way of a magnetic field and so it loses atmosphere to space as the solar wind blows it away. Same as on Mars.

Mars started out with an atmosphere not so different from Earth and most was blown away.

Venus started out with so much gas, and it was replenished and boosted over eons by geological processes that is still has the most dense atmosphere of any rocky planet.

Actually, we have reached a tipping point and it is having a major impact on us right now.

The jet stream configuration has changed.

The jet stream refers to the bands of high speed circulation in the upper atmosphere.

It influences the transfer of heat energy between the tropics and high latitudes.

The Northernmost of these bands has moved down South so far that it has passed South of the equator.

We have never seen this happen before. Even so far as we can reconstruct past jet stream patterns from weather records and the like, we have never seen it before.

The main effect was frighteningly described as: "The end of winter."

If this persists then we are entering a period of dramatic change.

Perhaps we should stop talking about global warming and climate change and refer to climate 2.0?

It's the global average that matters.

The same has happened across much of North America. They have been seeing a lot more snow each winter (except this last one, which saw very little - high El Nino).

That has been a function of the high arctic being MUCH warmer...and the seas remaining more open (not ice covered) much longer...and more water evaporating.....which leads to more snow.....and it only snows when it's warmer. You don't get snow at -20C. You get snow at -2C.

In places with cooler / wetter autumn and winter, the same thing can be at play.....more evaporation in the southern ocean leading to more cloud cover and rain.....further north. Feels colder there....*because* it's warmer somewhere else.

Not likely. Venus has no magnetic field. Nothing to deflect solar radiation harmful to life. It's MUCH closer to the Sun. Not a happy combo. I've seen stories that have suggested an airborne colony on Venus, sailing high in the clouds where it would be cooler. But that still doesn't address the cancer-by-lunchtime problem of solar radiation if unshielded.
