Yes was tongue in cheek but time will tell whether or not it'll remain that way

Time waits for no man! -
Umit Dundar, who has been appointed acting chief of military staff, has said 104 coup plotters have been killed, according to Reuters.
I wonder where they all were when that accident happened?

Dunno, but I suspect that they all suddenly got lead poisoning.
Athlonite:DaveB:Yep, very happy to be living here in NZ. The whole region is madness.
That's what happens when there is no separation of Religion and State

I don't understand. Religion is now the cause of every bad thing in the world? I guess it's also the cause of global warming next? Ok maybe I don't understand Turkey, please explain.

I don't think you'll get a simple explanation. Ergodan is an Islamist, probably a crook, a hard-liner, probably in breach of his role(s) with a secular constitution many times, cracks down on the free press, censors the internet, but practices liberal economics combined with somewhat left-leaning support for worker rights. I guess he'd be called a "nationalist" and that has implications and complications, taking into account the Ottoman empire, the slaughter of millions of Christians, yet the subsequent move to secularism which has more-or-less held together since WW1. And that's the risk with Ergodan, democratically elected (possibly), popular, but a threat to secularism in a mainly muslim (>95%?) country where potential loss of the secular republic is seen by many (including some of those in the army, apparently) as a massive threat. That position of many in the military understandable, as the greatly revered father of the secular republic, Ataturk, was a war hero and unarguably great leader and unifier.
Democracy has flaws - especially so when religion gets involved. Suppression of the attempted coup was surely a great victory for the principle of democracy, but probably not a victory for freedom.

And laughably people think that Turkey should join the EU.......
There's an vacancy / opening I believe now.

I've seen this kind of comment a few times in different places.
I think it is based on several incorrect assumptions.
Taking UK for example, the queen of England is head of the church of England and also the head of state. UK region is stable ; ).
Really and when she says we're going to war boys tell me what happens or would you like me to tell you nothing that's what happens as she no longer has that power that's because the Parliament has that power to decide to go or not the head of state but she's not a ruler like say the Saudi King who when he says jump you better jump
I wonder if this was all planned so it would emulate many of the events that followed the Reichstag fire in Germany, the "coup" seems to have given President Erdogan the ability to easily rid the country of his enemies and take more control over the military at the same time.

Not much point "wondering" about it when Erdogan after a "surprise" coup attempt seems to have no trouble recovering from the event and rounds up thousands of military, police, and the judiciary, chucks them in the slammer, and with populist support starts talking about reintroducing the death sentence.
This is a slowly unfolding disaster in the making. Turkey is in NATO, an ally to the US, was (with many glitches) a glimmer of hope that a stable secular republic with a Muslim majority could exist in peace. To hear now that Muslimist Erdogan supporters are persecuting people who may choose to drink a glass of wine or raki, threatening women who don't cover their heads in the streets, it's not a very good thing at all.
I know the very likely answer to this already, but on the OFF chance...
I am going to be in Berlin in Sept, and Turkey has always interested me from a food perspective, would I be completely insane going to Turkey under the current circumstances? It will be a very long time before I could get back there, but I am an even longer time dead!
