I've never been much of a subscriber to things, except for Geekzone the subs were a Christmas present from my kids.. 

Free sites? BBC, Al Jazeera, ThinkProgress, The Atlantic, CBC and many more

In the land of the free news sites, what do people recommend for good coverage? Niche stuff is also most welcome. I personally have been very impressed with the Spinoff lately. And Radio NZ's coverage remains amazing as always.

 

Well if you want another opinion on tech products and stuff, here's another website! (Don't listen to me, I'm biased! )

Back in 2010, I paid for the Guardian app on my iPhone.

It was rubbish. Utter rubbish. There was very little actual content and navigating around the app was so frustrating as half of the time there was no content in a whole section.

Before that, in about 2003, I subscribed to the Financial Times on my Handspring Visor. At first it seemed OK but over time, the number of articles was reduced and reduced until in August one year, it seemed that the intern who curated the online service went on holidays and for a whole month there were no updates at all!

I emailed the FT and complained and they basically told me to suck it up.

Those two experiences have totally cured me of any willingness to subscribe to any kind of paid news service. Period. If I live forever, I will still not forget and will not subscribe to another service.

Except:

I do subscribe to Bridge Magazine since it went online-only. Because it is only available for online subscription, the editor depends on it for his living and actually makes it work.

I used to subscribe to The Daily - News Corps iPad app.  I really loved it.  it was so slick, interesting articles and interactive. I'd be interested to hear if there is anything similar out there...

I have just paid a full year for the Washing Post digital edition, US$19. Worth it to keep on top of what's happening in the world that can influence our little country. Also paid The Guardian membership a few months back (I think round US$60).

Debating supporting The New York Times now.

I still don't see the merits on paying for anything NZ Herald or Stuff puts out.

I recently set up a recurring contribution to Newsroom. It's worth it to help keep serious investigative journalism alive.

The Guardian, New Scientist, Geekzone, and probably soon Newsroom.  That seems to fill my bubble.  No idea how much I spend, but whatever it is, it's worthwhile to support good journalism, and to avoid alternative facts.  I also read, free, The Register.

Better Half insists on getting NZ Herald Dead Tree style every day.  I find it useful to mop up spills and to fill the recycling bin.  She seldom reads it.  That costs waaay too much in my view, but who am I to begrudge her the pleasure?

Not at the moment.

Income is not what it used to be at present, so I'm being a bit skinflinty with expenses.

I will contemplate the Economist and the Telegraph when my finances are a bit more full-fat. Possibly the Washington Post as well.

I can't think of a mainstream NZ news site that is worthy of subscribing to. Stuff is just drivel. NZ Herald is both drivel and, with it's new website, excruciating to read (so I no longer bother). NBR has some good stuff, but not enough to justify a subscription.

I subscribe to The Times and The Daily Telegraph; neither is anywhere near as good as they used to be when they were print only. The internet has somehow ruined newspapers. The Daily Telegraph recently had an article titled "How do I keep my v*g**a clean?". Doubtless there is some part of the world that wants to know that, but ffs not over the cornflakes and coffee thank you and not in a broadsheet newspaper.

They just seem to fill space with utter rubbish these days - who is the best dressed at Glastonbury over the last few days has been one shining example of the asinine tat that gets published.

The FT is deathly dull to be honest unless you really like in depth finance stuff; it doesn't do non-financial news very well.

No, just an internet connection, a webbrowser and, in the case of WCL anyway, your librarycard number(with a current, valid subscription) and your last name.
