What is their definition of "at one time"? Has anyone had imports aggregated by a delay and treated as one for GST and Duty?

That's an interesting question.

I often order things in bursts, although being split orders they do often come through customs at about the same time depending on how long customs takes to clear them.

Sure, it's just this time it took significantly longer than usual. We are buying overseas all the time so we have a pretty good idea of what "usual" is.

If, when you say "busy", you are referring to something else than the usual turn around we got used to, do tell. Did something happen lately which made them busy comparing to the usual?

It's a hit or miss. I've seen two identical parcels arriving on the same date, one being let through, and the other held up and invoiced for GST. Actually seen it more than once in the last few years.

I had parcels that come in (from memory) a couple of days apart grouped together and GST charged on the total. To be safe I'd say leave a week between parcels.

They must be absolutely flat out then with a tsunami of parcels coming in as I'm still waiting on mine.

Clothes are subject to both duty and GST. According to "What's my Duty" it's $9 duty and $14.85 GST, total $23.85. So you may get a bill, or you may just be unlucky.

 

But its  under the De Minimis level of $60 so they will not charge the Duty or GST

 

 

I had a feeling that certain items such as clothing were not exempt. 

 

It could be possible that customs is waiting for the OP to pay the duty before releasing.  I'd call the delivery agent. 

 

This happened to me once. I had to register for a customs number and pay GST and/or duty.

Customs is being more problematic in order to make importing things a bit more frustrating and annoying so people will be discouraged and buy locally.....from someone else who imported in larger quantities and added a markup.

Given the $40 'fee' or whatever it is these days that they add for doing the job you already paid taxes for them to do, I would expect service in return....!

Mike, I read the newspapers and follow current affairs. I highly recommend it. I'm also able to read between the lines. 

Here's how it went a couple of years ago: After importer / retailer lobbyists moaned to the government about the amount of stuff being imported that was GST free and easy to do, the Customs department added more charges and delays to the process of importing things. 

I can't account for a clever guy like you not being aware of these and other events, or the consequences.....and I understand that in an effort to catch up you'd expect others (who have been paying attention) to fill in the gaps in your knowledge of current affairs.   

But honestly.....it's your gap. Fill it in, mate. Google this yourself instead of constantly (occasionally - no problem) demanding that others make up your shortfall in knowledge of recent events. 

The irony here is that we won't impose non-tariff trade barriers on our trade partners.....but no problems imposing such barriers on our own citizens. We'll use excuses like bio-security and user-pays.....but the EFFECT of the policy is to make importing smaller items more expensive and time consuming...and push more people toward local retailers (online and on the street).
