Talking about human rights is super excessive. Why would you want to drink somewhere they don't want you? It's probably because 18 - 20 year old kids deter the clientele they want to attract.

Drink somewhere else.

It's about the bar's atmosphere that dictates behaviour and clientele of the bar. If you offer cheap drinks and have "younger"/"pop" themes, younger people will come. if you make things more expensive and theme it around a more classic style bar then older people will come.

Illegally discriminating seems "super excessive".

I wonder sometimes if these places do the R21/R25 thing as a marketing 'gimmick'?

So, advertise at the door etc that you are R21/25 - you will attract a clientele that doesn't want to party with the 18-20's. I'd say if you rocked up looking 'mature' you probably wouldn't get turned away (though, they will probably card anyone who looks under 25 anyway).

Fair point, I've been in there with a mixed age group (some under and some over 21) and they didn't ask for ID at all for the first couple rounds then when the bartender changed he asked us all and were subsequently reminded of the R21 policy and asked to leave

I believe its the bar owners right to restrict entry as they see fit. It is their premises so it is their choice to set the rules.

My favourite watering hole seems to repel all people in their 20s.  They open the door, see all the age 40+ patrons and flee immediately.  Presumably in case 'old' is contagious.  Little do they know they are already infected.

Yes it is illegal to discriminate against someone because of their age.

They can come up with other reasons to block your entry, but specifically under the human rights act, they cannot cite age as the reason if you are not legally barred - such as being under 18.

I know there was a news story in Kapiti a few years ago where a they went to mediation with a complainant and the decision went against the bar.
