Just say you forgot your card and they'll swipe one for you at New World or Countdown to give you the discounts.

I've had push back from several Countdown stores recently where I've forgotten my card. They now need to pull the supervisor in to provide a card and approve the process.

I do this most times I go in.

I dont like carrying 57 different "rewards" cards so I dont.

Tell the checkout operator you forgot yours and ask for the store card - sometimes its a wee hassle to get the supervisor over and swipe the card which is perfect for me because I want the staff to hate the rewards cards as much as I do

Off-topic for privacy issues, but I've had an interesting time with this new card. The first hole I fell down was not reading the letter so not registering the new card before trying to use it at the gas station (no 16c per litre off opening special for me). Then, when you use it for gas you get asked if you want to "keep or use your discount". Turns out you can accumulate the discount at 6c per litre over a month. For me this doesn't seem to make any difference - if I buy 50l a week I get $3 off a fill at 6c or $12 off my monthly fill at 24c discount with the added risk that my discount will expire. I think if you bought the minimum (6 x $40 over 3 weeks, $80 fill with 36c discount) you get a small bonus ($6 per month - nice but hardly worth the effort). I watched the video and it seems that saving discounts lets you bring in extra discounts from the AA but I lost interest at that point.

The idea to save money is to accumulate on small spends. If you spend exactly $40 on petrol (roughly 20l) you get 6cpl to accumulate, so if you spent $40 twice in a week you'd get 12cpl off. You could then fill up your tank with the full ~50l saving 12cpl.

It's not uncommon to see people use 2 pumps at a Caltex or BP so they can put 2 x $40 in their car so they can accumulate the 12c in a single visit.

Smart Fuel should be restricted by the Commerce Commission to a maximum of 4cpl like all fuel discounting in Australia. The effect it's had on skewing fuel prices, forcing up retail margins and reducing market competition is incredibly clear.
