If a product is sent overseas for repair under warranty then you don't pay but the customs declaration needs to make this very clear. If a product is sent overseas for repair and it's not under warranty you'll pay GST on it's return.

That's because at that price there is no duty or GST to pay.

Going back to the OP - the fact something is 2nd hand makes no difference at all. You pay duty, and/or GST on all imported goods.

Yep. Ask the Govt what GST is used for . Its a tax that replaced sales tax. We all earn a salary or a wage, the Govt is also a worker, for us, it earns tax.

What would happen with servicing an expensive watch? (I don't have one, but I had a boss who used to send them overseas). I don't recall if the servicing was free or not. Would this apply a high end shock absorber? IE mountainbike or motorbike? Send it overseas to have a custom tune, and sent back?

I guess you would simply produce your original proof of purchase.

Yes, if you own something already I can see not the slightest logic in you having to pay tax just because you had to send it somewhere outside NZ to get work done. Brietling, for example - and Rolex still, I believe - service their watches in Australia so if you live in NZ they need to go there.

I've sent both makes to Australia for service via AD's and there has never been any tax paid nor any attempt to get it paid.

The GST is only payable on the repair cost not the value of the watch. Have any of the service charges approached $400?

I got stung the other day - I had purchased something and paid $394 NZD for it including shipping, but Customs use a different exchange rate than the money transfer service I used - so they calculated the value at $410 NZD and I was up for $150. Would have never purchased it if I knew it was going to cost me 40% more :(

Happened to me. If you are under the limit, you get off free. If you are just over, you pay GST and then added fees for having to pay GST. It feels like being penalised for paying tax.

The information about the GST charge came to me in a phone call.

I was so taken aback at the time that I didn't take too much notice of who it was that called me.

Turned out it was the NZ branch of Fedex, the outfit that shipped the goods.

So Fedex are telling me that I have to pay them the $170, which, presumably, they will pass on to NZ Customs, or whoever collects these fees.

This sounds a bit weird to me...

That's normal for Fedex (and DHL I think) and actually quite handy. Saves you having to deal with Customs which can delay it.

Yes, easily. A full service on a Rolex is the thick end of $1000.

Sometimes they just don't notice so you win. I've had things turn up untaxed which would have been over the limit.

Yeah, you're dead right.

The more I think about it, the weirder this looks.

I mean, when I was on B&H Photo's website and selected Fedex as the shipper, why the frigg wasn't I told that, on top of the Fedex freight charge, there'd be another $173 to pay???

This stinks.

My sister got pinged on a warranty replacement from an international vendor about 18 months ago.

You should get this sighted by customs on export next time. They have a form for this.

So you won't get GST & duty on the way back in
