That was certainly a remarkably awful performance by Paul Henry. Closed-minded, ignorant, and thoroughly opinionated, talking over Gareth all the time, making the interview a completely pointless contest.

At least Paul Henry stopped the rubbish that Gareth Morgan was spewing. Morgan crazy ideas would wreck our economy and he is supposed to be an economist, I wonder where he purchased his diploma from.

Nice one Mike.

So you think it's the place of an interviewer to stop someone being interviewed from spouting what in your opinion is "rubbish" so that nobody else gets to hear what he's got to say, then you launch into an ad-hominem attack against him yourself?

I suggest you calm down, think about that with reference to how you've reacted at times to others when they've tried to shut people down on these forums.

I don't agree with GM's "equity tax" BTW, but I do respect his expertise, and would have liked to hear him discuss it in more detail rather than just seeing him being shouted down.

You must be kidding.

Not at all.

Feel free to support this loony.  Then spend your life trying to get ahead only to be taxed for the privilege sending you backwards again (aka being told what to do with YOUR money).

On that topic, wasn't his kiwisaver a disaster, making some of the lowest returns of any scheme before being bought out (forget by whom).

Gareth sounds like a complete menace and I consider myself pretty left.

If you'd have opened your mind a bit, then I presume that the argument would have been that with an equity tax replacing (all or part of) income taxes, then you'd be able to spend time getting ahead by working to increase income rather than equity.  I presume that would also create jobs/wealth, rather than encourage dead non-productive investment which doesn't.

Calling him a loony for expressing new ideas confirms how closed-minded people can be.

It reflects poorly on you too.

I attended a seminar where Gareth Morgan rubbished Kiwi Saver saying he would have nothing to do with it, then what does he do? Set up a fund. The guy is a plonker and a less than honest plonker

Here we go again, you really need to stop attacking those who have a differing view, its tiresome.

That was very well deserved, as are my comments about your behaviour in this thread.

I am not making ad-hominem attacks.

I'd kind of hoped this was supposed to be a discussion forum, not a popularity contest to see who can make the wittiest and most condemning one-liners about somebody who has the guts to challenge the status quo.

Then rejoice in his slaughter by Paul Henry.

Pack of wolves.  Sorry my not joining in upsets you.

Are you really? You've been spamming this thread - now with at least 5 posts which appear to offer little more than repeated ad-hominem attacks, insulting GM.

Getting back to the issue, Morgan's ideas would strip assets for generations, strip living incomes from Seniors. Take away investments and venture capital, increase poverty, increase unemployment, increase demand on health services, increase homelessness and produce a brain and wealth drain from New Zealand.

He's a certifiable loon.

His idea of 'fair' seems to be the usual left wing one of dragging everyone down to the lowest common denominator.

As opposed to the right wing one of elevating a tiny elite above everyone else?

Or going for equality of opportunity rather than equality of outcome - the former being possible, the latter impossible.

Ah - so there are issues worth discussing.

I'll counter by saying that existing policies ensure multi-generational concentration of wealth which if it isn't put in check, will create a new feudalism and is counter to the concept of democratic capitalism based on meritocracy.  It will self-destruct - or in the meantime require increasingly authoritarian restriction on freedoms to keep order.

I agree that there would be an impact on investment, I don't presume to know how that would manifest, but for example when GST was increased, pensions were increased to offset that increase.

The basic idea - to divert investment from property to production has merit - and could create jobs.

I think Morgan is serious - but not in any way expecting his suggestion of "asset tax" to be implemented. I'm sure he knows why it would fail.

You're thinking of Communism there just as much as any other form of politics. I have not noticed Comrade Castro or his fellow travellers toiling in Tractor Factory Number 12 for a bowl of gruel and a few roubles to spend in an empty shop...!
