Did anyone see this?

http://www.newshub.co.nz/politics/tax-policy-bust-up-gareth-morgan-trades-insults-with-paul-henry-2016120808

In my opinion, Morgan is one of the biggest plonkers (this is the best word I could get through the swear filter).  He surely cannot be serious with his tax policy?

His equity tax policy is pure lunacy.

Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.

Ooh, he got a bit snippy there didn't he? What did he expect Paul Henry to do?

Can't see him going through with registering his party.

As he's suggested that the policy would be as popular as a cup of cold sick, I'm sure that he's well aware that it's never going to fly.

However, given that there is increasing wealth disparity (note I'm saying wealth - not income in this case) which if it continues will put home ownership out of reach of anybody who doesn't have inherited wealth, perhaps some other positive suggestions / debate as to how it might be addressed may have been his point.  I agree with him that the promise of "trickle-down" didn't really work.

MikeB4:

His equity tax policy is pure lunacy.

Yes, and the way we've set policy to encourage investment with the result of a rise in house prices to 10x median household income is pure lunacy, Labour's proposed "kiwibuild" policy is also sheer lunacy.

Good on Gareth (again) for putting something bound to be unpopular out there.

There's a little background to the "equity tax" proposal here:

I watched it, he certainly won't be getting my vote.

That was certainly a remarkably awful performance by Paul Henry. Closed-minded, ignorant, and thoroughly opinionated, talking over Gareth all the time, making the interview a completely pointless contest.

He also wants to cut pensions by about half. How he can expect someone to live on that is beyond me. Of course HE won't have to!

It depends on how you interpret it.  I saw it the exact opposite way.  Morgan wouldn't shut up enough to let Henry complete one question.

He's a certifiable loon.

His idea of 'fair' seems to be the usual left wing one of dragging everyone down to the lowest common denominator.

At least Paul Henry stopped the rubbish that Gareth Morgan was spewing. Morgan crazy ideas would wreck our economy and he is supposed to be an economist, I wonder where he purchased his diploma from.

You must be kidding.  The interviewer is supposed to be asking questions (open) then probing.  Henry used this - as always - as nothing more than a platform to express his personal opinion.

The first paragraph in the news article sums it up:

Gareth Morgan, leader of the new Opportunities Party, tried to explain his tax policy to Paul Henry on Thursday morning.

He completely failed - thanks to Paul Henry.

That might have been great entertainment and popular - but in any journalistic sense, Henry's performance was an abject failure verging on deliberate sabotage.

It failed because Morgan failed to defend the indefensible, he then just started to mutter rubbish.

To be fair, that's his mo. Always has been, always will be. People should be prepared for it when they go in. Instead Morgan got flustered and angry - very poor political material.
