Paul1977:

I'm going to be the Star Wars Grinch and say I'm not excited at all.

The prequels were utter garbage. The Force Awakens was an improvement, but quite forgettable and hardly a classic.

Yet everyone still gets super excited when a new one comes out... go figure.

I'm vaguely excited. My father took me to see the original in London at the Odeon in Leicester Square in 1977 when it came out and I grew up in a home and boarding schools filled with the cards, toys and so on of that time.

However I am pretty much 50 years old now. No film in the franchise yet made beats the first 3 films other than in the quality of the special effects and some of them were frankly downright pants - Starship Troopers was a better film than several - especially the ones with Binks in. Would so love to see his head on a pole in the background of one of the current ones....

At 50 ish, films just don't get me to spend the wee small hours in cinemas or to get up at Ridiculous O'Clock in the morning to see them.

I only liked the first three.
The last one was just ok.
I'd like them to get back to the spirit of the first two.

The first three are still by far and away (or perhaps, Far, far away....!)  the best of the lot.

The middle three should be burned and never shown again.

The last one was passable but....

I'm wondering when the Ultimate Sin will be committed - remaking the first three....

Meeting my son in Wellington and going to the midnight showing. I'm looking forward to it, haven't seen the boy for a few weeks. Not exactly like going to see A New Hope with my mum when I was 7 (he's 19).

Bit of a worry, I think every midnight showing I've been to has been awful, Matrix 2 & 3, the 'Binks' trilogy. Oh well, fingers crossed. work will be a bit slow tomorrow.

Well that depends on how you define the 'middle' and 'first. Chronologically the 'first' are actually the 'middle. Ep IV V VI. With the 'middle' being prequels I II III. Assuming you look at it that way ;) Some Ep numbering for clarity required :D

I think the prequals were good, not because of the characters or story but because they expanded out the universe and story to be more than good vs. evil. The Force Awakens was terrible - a complete copy of A New Hope.. No back story or reasoning - just there's a big planet with a laser beam lets destroy it.

I never understood the universal loathing of Jar Jar. I quite liked him. At last, an uncoordinated role model I could relate to.

You're definitely in the minority on that one!

While not a great movie by any means, The Force Awakens at least felt more in the spirit of the originals (although at times to point of being too like Ep IV). I thoroughly enjoyed it up until the point Han and Chewie conveniently show up, then it went down hill really fast.

My 9yo loved Jar Jar when she first saw the movies. Was disappointed he was not in the second. I on the other hand disliked him immensely.

I suspect the younger your are (in life or at heart) the more you like Jar Jar.

Has anyone read this theory on Jar Jar?

Definitely worth a look for a bit of entertainment at the very least imo.

I'll probably go see it once the crowds die down somewhat. I don't like seeing movies where the theatre is full or almost full.

loathe him or love him, he is at least memorable.

I take it none of his relative's in this latest film. The previous one was virtually a remake of Episode 4 a new hope.  Is this latest a remake of Empire strikes Back and is it actually any good
