Maybe they have it, but I was never aware of 'official' dates for the start of seasons when I lived in the UK.

Here, they seem to announce them and then expect the weather to change the following day....!

Surely, seasons are simply vague in terms of when they begin and end, how hot/cold they are compared to last time and so on? They are a natural occurrence and it seems a trifle odd to expect them to function according to human calendar dates and expectations.

The thread is about how the seasons that we experience, are tending to change. Due to climate change it would appear, so different weather due to that may cause different start of summer, mid summer and end of summer in some locations, thats all.

Grand solar minimum will reduce growing seasons, e.g. summer is later, winter is earlier. That's what happened in the past anyway. Global warming alarmists say that the coming minimum will be wiped out by warming - let's hope so, because many people died of starvation and disease the last time temps dropped due to a grand solar minimum.

As a kid I clearly recall summer starting so that Xmas day was generally pretty warm.

Our kids woke 2 nights ago because their rooms are too cold.

Water temp in Whangamata over xmas was 2c colder than 2 years ago.

Anecdotal I accept, however in my mind it's pretty clear.

Based on the stuff I read, we had all better learn to be pretty bloody good swimmers! :)

Purely looking at my personal impression as a human being of the time I have been alive (almost 50 years) and trying to eliminate the rose tinted spectacles that make every childhood summer last 10 months and be a giant picnic of ham sandwiches, sticky buns and lashings of ginger beer whilst catching sticklebacks in jam jars and so on....it really seems about the same. Sometimes warm summers, sometimes wet summers, sometimes dry summers, sometimes cold ones, same for the other seasons.

We used to get a white christmas perhaps one year in five growing up and that seems to be much the same now - it's a long while since the Thames froze and they had ice fairs in winter on it! My father remembered one year - early 60's I think - when the UK had over 20 feet of snow, so if global warming prevents that here, let me go start my V8!

The variation between solar cycles apparently correlates with regional variation in "weather" patterns, but a correlation isn't shown with global temperatures.

The past few years have seen the weakest solar maximum in >100 years, following a deep solar minimum, yet simultaneous record high global average temperatures.

The effect on "weather" is hypothesised to be due to things like cloud-seeding from cosmic radiation spallation, variations in intensity of short wavelength UV radiation, but there's bugger-all variation in overall solar radiation within cycles or between cycles.

If global warming "alarmists" say that the "coming" minimum is going to result in anything, they're getting well ahead of themselves - as there's no consensus yet on how weak or strong the next solar cycle will be. That's forecast by consensus among a scientific panel after solar minimum is reached - so in the meantime, take stuff you may read on conspiracy theorist / denialist unscientific site like "WattsUp" with a large grain of salt.
