It's just a credit card/fraud thing, hotels will do this too.

A hotel will simply use a credit card for a bond. I've never had a hotel in any country (except those where they are required to lodge your details such as Japan) ever want to take a copy of my ID.

ive had that in Singapore.

You're not on Atlantis anymore, Duncan Idaho.

Ok, you have purchased and paid for the goods... They are now legally your goods. They have seen your identity documents and your identity is not in dispute. So if they now intend to deprive you permanently of the goods (unless you do some other thing) makes it theft.

If they want a copy of your ID for their records then that is their problem. Under the privacy act they must have a valid reason to keep your information. "We don't trust our staff to do their jobs" is not a valid reason.

I just asked them to send me everything they now have on me, as by law they have to supply it if requested (Privacy act), including sales, orders, correspondence (emails, hard copy, computer records) etc. Said they should not have a problem with getting that info as they do now have a copy of my DL.

Also said I have no problems if they want to give me a call to talk about the issue.

Would be for CC fraud, Quite a few merchant services providers have raised the amounts of security required from the retailer 5-6x and shopping around hasn't dropped this by much.

Without a copy of the ID presented and invoice there's no proof other than the staff's word (Which doesn't count for much when fighting a charge back). They are clear about this in their privacy statement https://www.pbtech.co.nz/privacy that they do collect photo id and refusal to do so would mean you might not be able to get the item.

If you dont want to provide id then as someone said cancel the online order, Card present transactions in store carry less risk that online purchases hence the beefcake measures :)

Pretty much every airline and hotel i've ever used has swipped my passport (which contains all the data in machine readable format or copied it on a photocopier)

PB covers this in their privacy statement.

In particular:

What information does PB need to collect from you as a customer?

PB, in dealing with you as a customer, may need to collect and retain information that identifies you as a customer so that transactions can be carried out either online or personally. The information we may collect includes:

For establishing an account:

  • Name and address(es)
  • Contact telephone number(s) and email address(es)

For personal identification:

  • Photo ID – either NZ Driver’s licence, passport (NZ or foreign), or an NZ 18+ card (Note foreign driver’s licenses cannot be verified and are therefore not accepted)

Why does PB collect and retain personal information?

We use this information to undertake any dealings or transactions with you (see the Terms and Conditions for further details). Personal photo ID information may not be needed unless you need to personally pick up goods from any one of the PB stores, and we need to ascertain that the person picking up the goods is the correct person as per the transaction. We may take a copy of the identification supplied. This is also to protect your interest and security as a PB customer.

Personally, I think they should reconsider the situations in which they 'collect and retain' information for the purpose of picking an order. As others have pointed out, it should be enough for PB to sight the ID and not copy it. I see no benefit to PB in taking a copy other than to avoid a "he said/she said" situation if there is a dispute over whether the pickup was handed over to the correct person. In that situation, their privacy policy ought to be that they destroy copies of ID 30 days after the order is picked up.

You can issue charge backs upto 6 months after the fact depending on the issuer (4months is the shortest i've seen)

i had this for the first time when i picked up my V20.

i put it down to them being extra careful due to being a higher valued product.

In other times i have walked in and had no issue.

Not sure if it comes down to the store as the Henderson store seems more relaxed than the one near britomart.

Actually I am sure I read somewhere that it is against the law to make a copy of a passport or a driving license.

On a similar issue I had a run in with Noel Leemings I had bought a set of Bose earbuds online. Paid for them online and they were sent to me from their warehouse. They developed a fault. I was told that I had to physically take them to a bricks and mortar store for them to send them off. As i had the time i argued the point , even got consumer affairs involved (lol great to have the time to waste) In the end they arranged for a courier to pick them up and take them to the warehouse. But i bet they haven't changed their policy.

Ask for a copy of theirs in return so you know who to send the cops after when your identity is stolen. I won't let any NGO copy anything.

I would contact the privacy commissioner to seek clarification about that. My bank took a photocopy of mine yesterday for a new bank account, but I would expect that they would have those records locked in a vault for privacy and security, to prevent any risk of identity theft. I wouldn't be happy if shop wanted to photocopy them, because how are they securing that information, and why do they need to retain it on record? If you are buying online, they don't ask for it, nor do they store it. So why do they need it for pickup. I can appreciate them viewing it, so the correct person is picking up the item, as I have been asked to see it at Noel Leemings before. But they never asked to take a photocopy or photo of it.

I would be interested to hear the outcome.
