So ordered something around $150 last night and set it for pick up at north shore.

Paid via credit card (online).

Got a text saying it was ready to pick up and to bring photo ID and the credit card I used.

Get to pbtech have to wait 15 minutes to be able to get to the checkout (really dumb place to have picks from) when I get told they have to photo copy my drivers license.  I said no you can sight my drivers license to make sure the person picking it up and ordering it is the same person.  They said no we need to photo copy it because of "company policy" or they would not let me take the goods.

Does anyone else have a problem with them keeping a copy of your ID on file?  I really don't want PBtech to have my DL number, DOB, Address, if i am a donor or not, class of license etc.  There is no need for them to have all this info.

I can understand if it's a contract for finance etc but it's a store with goods I have already paid for and just picking up.

Personally, I think you have a right to be hacked off.

We have so much personal info 'out there' already without our DL being demanded like that.

Probably been burned a number of times, internally or externally. They are trying to prevent fraud and that's the best thing they can think of. Any other suggestions for a solution?

Edit: not disagreeing with your point at all tho.

I love it when overseas companies want a copy of my passport to prove who I am - I refuse, because altho its my name etc on the passport, legally its still government property and Im not handing it over to some faceless entity sitting behind a desk who knows where. Yes, 9/10 its perfectly fine but........ :)

They just need to sight an ID and if really needed record the DL number and the number in 5B.
The fact that they now have a photo of me and all my info has got me a little ticked off.

Do they get and keep photo ID for all customers? It seems over the top. All they need to do is sight it.
I would have refused the goods and demanded a refund immediately.

Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.

Maybe you could allow them to photocopy and review it using a black vivid pen to redact anything you don't want showing like photo date of birth etc.?

You should have asked for a copy of their drivers license to prove who you dealt with in the store and a copy of their employment agreement to prove they had the authority to act in the company's behalf. Fairs fair.

Lazy is such an ugly word, I prefer to call it selective participation

Cancel the online order, then just buy it in store (they've got the stock!) as normal - no ID required....

Not sure what your rights here are but I would certainly pursue the matter, both with the company and on public fora. This endless demanding of private data has to stop somewhere.

It's just a credit card/fraud thing, hotels will do this too.

A hotel will simply use a credit card for a bond. I've never had a hotel in any country (except those where they are required to lodge your details such as Japan) ever want to take a copy of my ID.

I was in Greece last year. Half of the hotels wanted to copy my passport, saying that it was a requirement. The other half didn't even mention it. Makes you wonder...

I have had them do this also, but in my case has been when collecting goods purchased onaccount, which I felt was acceptable.
