I always found libraries really useful when I was unemployed and needed somewhere central with Wifi access to base myself while job seeking. I think the Wellington Central Library was also used as emergency accommodation when people were unable to get home during the flooding late last year.

As borrowing books slowly goes out of fashion I hope that libraries will remain as community hubs rather than disappearing altogether.

But librarians aren't needed for either function you mention.

I haven't seen any good justification for why we shouldn't reduce the number of librarians in Auckland - even in any of our other main cities. Many core library functions - issuing "books", for example - are becoming more online and automated.

Libraries are not kindergartens.

Say someone who don't have kids? I guess you won't understand that.

If the Auckland council wants to trim $1.8mil plus just kill the $15 mil "beautification" of the Mt Albert shopping strip. It works fine as it is..

I'd vote to keep the libraries as is and make savings elsewhere.

Fortunately that curse has escaped me. As an adult, I prefer libraries to be quiet places of study and knowledge seeking. Children have a variety of places to be noisy. Adults have few where they can enjoy silence.

What's wrong with a tree hut? Oh that's right - there's no 'app' for that. Probably no trees on the 380m² section either... and even if there were it'd be classed as child abuse by some sticky-beak government agency if they were permitted to actually climb up them...

They should do BOTH - why save $15M when you can save $16.8M?

They'll wreck Mt Albert with anything they do - it's the first I've heard of this plan but I'm sure they'll make it so there's nowhere left to park in a misguided attempt to get people to go there on public transport - which won't work because it never does when public transport is so hopeless - and at the same time add to traffic congestion with needless spaces for people to stand around which will in fact only attract juvenile delinquents. Am I close?

Yeah. I enjoy my time at the Library. I want my kids to have the same experience.

I believe that if that person does not vote/take part in decision making - he/she should not complain what the government of the day does.

It is the same as with this library issue, as this will mainly affect the future generation. If that person has no stake in the future (no children etc), then tough. Life in this world is finite. Let us ensure the future generation continue what we have enjoyed here.

Not so much a "should", but rather a luxury of having your own space that you can use for your own purposes. You can make as much or as little noise as you chose to in your "man-cave". There are many places where you can enjoy peace & quiet. In the case of Geektastic, he has a complete living space available to himself where he can enjoy that quietness.
