Apart from house, probably most expensive one off item I ever purchased for myself was my Subaru wagon @$12k.  Jointly with the wife, most expensive item would be the current family wagon @$14k.

If you have a house, then most things in a house that need replacing end up being very spendy, when you add on labour. eg a new fire maybe the best part of $7-10k, a new Oven 3k, a new bathroom 20k etc.

Many moons ago I spent about $10K on a new computer setup. I got 64MB of RAM in the machine which was about 64% of the total cost :)

I remember when $3000 in the 90's (which is probably around $5k in todays money) , used to be quite a cheap computer.
