All the crap we were fed about "high costs" was just that: crap. NZ is cheap...and relatively easy.

Wow, what NZ are you living in mate? NZ is far from cheap IMO

- Overpriced electricity

- Fuel

- house prices (and of poor quality)

- GST

- And overpriced restaurants. Eating out as a family is ridiculously expense nowadays and we have cut it down to not more than every fortnight.

I could go on .......

I will tip for exceptional service, but that's rare. NZers aren't good at service.

Isn't this one of the reasons those supporting tipping argue in its favour, ie it improves service as it gives workers an incentive to try harder?

Personally, if that's the case I'm happy to carry on with the current standard of service as I'd hate to see tipping take a hold in NZ.

Research shows that tipping doesn't improve service. An exceptional server will get 20%, anything else will be fairly randomly 15-19%.

Why can't restaurant managers identify who their best servers are, and pay them an extra 5% (or more)?

To me, it's a way of hiding the true cost of (e.g.) a meal from the consumer. The restaurant puts a price on the menu that is NOT what the customer is expected to pay.

I do wonder what Paula Bennett thinks the benefit of tipping is? As per the OP, I think this an election year kite put up as much to gain publicity as anything else.

But you want to add to the price of eating out by adding 10-20% by introducing tipping?

Tipping, No.

Is this just a ploy by the government to introduce the living wage, without 'officially' raising the minimum wage?

And that opens up a whole new discussion.

As others have said, tipping is just going to make eating out more expensive that it is now. And it's already expansive enough to take a family (2 adults 2 kids) out for a meal.

I came across two restaurants wanting tips on a recent trip to Paihia and Russell. One in Paihia had tip jars but the restaurant in Russell had on their account and payment screen a prompt to add 20% tip. I refuse on principle and I challenged the Russell they said it was added by the EFTpos company. That sounded like BS to me.

I blame our minimum wage for this

eracode:

IMO a truly daft idea. Tipping in the US is a major PITA and a symptom of a seriously screwed-up part of their economy - we should keep well away from anything similar.

IMO I think it works much better in the US. In fact so much better that I can rarely account for really bad restaurant service from all the times I have dined there (unlike here in NZ). I blame our minimum wage for this cock-up in NZ. (high restaurant prices/poor service)

Most people that are against this are not very well traveled, and don't really understand how bad our hospitality industry really is.

I dont believe we should drop the minimum wage completely, just give waiters/waitresses the opportunity to earn a little more for working harder, and bettering their customer service. Currently they all get paid the same rate if they offer outstanding service or not <=== thats a problem.

Where will you draw the line? Some front-line people in many service occupations are not well-paid. Will you tip the person in the bank branch who gives you good service? Or the person on the returns desk at Bunnings when you need to return something? The person who fills your car at Z? What makes dining special?

The market will sort out the waitpeople and their wages - supply, demand, customer feedback, observation by the boss.

We travel extensively in the UK, Europe and North America. The tipping system in the US is crazy and a major irritation. Americans have to live with it because it's embedded and they don't know better. Fortunately we do.

I don't and won't tip for good service. You're employed and paid to deliver good service, not bad service, so why should I give you more money for doing what you're paid you do?

However, I have been known to tip for GREAT service (although haven't received it often). If you're in the hospitality/service industry and I consider you've absolutely gone above and beyond, I might make it worth your while.

I would love to see the minimum wage for waiters/waitresses brought right down. There is no reason we need a minimum wage for these kinds of jobs. These jobs should be aimed at students etc. Not at people trying to support a family.

Totally disagree with that last statement. You're entitled to think otherwise, of course.

No tipping in NZ please.

As a customer my responsibility is to pay for goods/service etc.  It's the employers responsibility to pay their employees at least minimum wage.

If minimum wage is too low here, then the obvious solution is to put it up - for all sectors not just hospitality.

NZ definitely is not cheap for the most part - especially if you require quality rather than cheap junk.

Eating out is ludicrously expensive, with the price vs quality equation seriously out of balance.

I do not really drink alcohol much but I am always stunned by the insane mark-up on booze in restaurants and pubs and the fact that people are willing to pay $60 for wine they could buy in the supermarket for $18 or pay $12 for one beer that costs the same for 4 bottles in the supermarket. It's blatant profiteering and I wonder at the stupidity of people willing to participate in it. Why should a bottle of wine cost 3 times as much just because it is in a restaurant - who purchased it at trade and claimed the GST back to boot?

But surely its because of the extortionate wages owners are forced to pay their staff ?

I used to hear that in Europe you could make a career out of being a waiter. That certainly contradicts your comment.
