I hate to say this here, but you still have to consider yourselves lucky in what you pay for petrol. Having lived in the UK up until three years ago, I know when petrol is expensive. The current cost per litre in the UK is equivalent to $3.00, and diesel is roughly $3.25, and the government gets 80% (yes 80%) of all that in tax!

I'm no more in favour of paying more than the next person, but the only way I cut the amount of petrol I use is to move house or change job. The other alternative is to use public transport, but that would double my travelling time, assuming it was reliable.

Yes, petrol is relatively cheap in NZ. Have a look at this international comparison: http://www.med.govt.nz/upload/35799/Graph%20-%20International%20-%202007-12.pdf
It shows that petrol costs more-or-less the same in most countries, before taxes are added. It is the taxes that create most of the difference in retail petrol prices from country to country. NZ has relatively low taxes on petrol, so the retail price is much lower than in many other countries.

Unfortunately, having relatively low petrol taxes makes our retail prices more sensitive to changes in wholesale crude oil prices.

I wonder if the people crying to the media about the $$ being too high have grasped this fact..

People say we have cheap gas, but take into acount the dollar value.

Eg, as mentioned, over in the UK, fuel is $3.00 a litre. Or a pound a litre.

Yea, thats expensive when you take your New Zealand wage into consideration, but what if you're on a Brittish wage? The rest of the stuff is dirt cheap over there in comparison to NZ prices, and the average wage is higher isn't it? This is the comments that I've had from people who have come back from there.

its very clever and if everyone follows this, it will work, i am pretty sure this is the only way to fight this petrol price rise.

Yes, a bit a a whinge when petrol hits $2/ltr may be justified in some corners, but when you drive about and see no shortage of big sixes and V8s, not to mention 4wds and large people movers, it can't be hurting that much...
OK, I drive a 2ltr Opel up and down NW motorway every day, and a few short runs, can still get 35 UK mpg or 8l/100km, the price is irritating but it's still cheaper per week than a 10 trip bus card - if you have a car it has to be regd, WOF'd and insured, whether you drive it or not.
If everyone is genuine about complaining when petrol is real $$$ for a fill, have a think about what you drive and how it is driven - manual gearboxes are all good, along wiith a bit of proper maintenance and a bit of intelligence behind the wheel. Not rocket science, just don't go buying a used import slushmatic overweight gaspig...
And if you like big cars, cool, just deal with it. Done. Rant finished.

Best way to beat price rises is to drive smarter like taking weight out of your car that isn't necessary (like a boot full of junk like my car has, whoops), don't have the windows down, turn off air-con, remove roofracks if they aren't factory fitted, check tire pressure ... all stuff that is logical and I could go on and on.

Not buying from a major company for a day won't do anything. Its assuming their margins are so tight that it would sting them. They wouldn't even notice. It might affect the cash flow of a small independant but not the oil company itself

Slighty off topic - but I know from working at Mobil that the profits from petrol were quite low and that ciggies & V (ie, the drink) were where most stations made most of their money

Mauricio, did you read the topic at all? and why you keep calling it chain letter!!

if you can please explain why its not clever and please tell me why do you think it wont work? i mean anyone disagree with it should have their view and point on that. so far evry one saying its spam, chain letter, or it wont work, without any given reason!!

Its spam because i get about 10 copys of it a day, which i ignore because i enjoy driving my car and dont mind paying for that enjoyment.
Is that a good enough reason or do i need to mention to part which says "all you have to do is send this to your friends. " ?
Sounds like a typical spammy chain letter to me.

Is a $4 drop a "plunge"? If I saw a headline that said "oil prices plunge" I'd be expecting at least a 10 per cent drop!

Pac n save in the lower NI has 15c coupons this weekend. Has anyone seen if any other petrol companies are dropping prices?
