I am in favour of this... I would buy 1 bottle per day or every other day..
Plastic can be recycled, but depending on your council/area, and the cleanliness of the bottles, they may just get thrown out or shipped off to another country.
At least with glass, we are not supporting the plastic industry, and they are recycled/reused locally.
Someone needs to start a petition page...
May get thrown out or shipped off? According to the media it's a statistical certainty. This Stuff article claims that there is not a single plastic recycling facility located within New Zealand - it is merely sorted here before being shipped offshore, where it is recycled or dumped.
"China's import ban on dirty plastic [which started this month] has thrown the spotlight on our reliance on Asia's recycling plants, proving a need for facilities here.
But the Government has indicated it is unlikely to be throwing ministry money into getting recycling plants off the ground here, meaning Kiwi recycling will continue to be shipped overseas.
From this month, China will no longer accept many different types of waste, including all plastics, because of contamination problems.
Australia-based Visy Recycling, Reclaim, Green Gorilla, EnviroWaste and Waste Management are the major operators that collect and sort New Zealanders' waste.
None of them process it for re-use as new products. Rather, they clean it and organise it into waste groups to send elsewhere. Sometimes that elsewhere is a landfill".
The reality is that if a plastic bottle has not been washed, or if the lid has not been removed before being put in your recycling bin, it will almost certainly end up in landfill, in either New Zealand or Asia.
