I have always wondered if the children of nudists grow up traumatised. Are there any measurable effects on them? I'm not one myself (too self-conscious) but my understanding is that they regularly take family holidays in the buff where they join other like-minded people doing normal recreational things. So the kiddies boys and girls are all going to be seeing a lot of dongs waving around in the breeze. So do they grow up as bed-wetters and thumb suckers? Do they spring out of the bushes exposing themselves to hapless passers-by? If these kids are normal, then why such a panic if other kids are exposed to accidental nudity? Personally, I think it is all nonsense. We all have bodies. We all know what they look like. What possible harm can come from seeing someone else's?

Are there any children of nudists here? I can only speculate but it would be interesting to hear actual experiences.

According to the naturist federation "cases of children being upset by the sight of nude people are extremely rare. At a naturist club, children are completely safe. Members are screened before acceptance and will have their membership terminated if they behave inappropriately. Because they do not want this, it is never an issue. So it is a much safer environment for children than at (for example) a beach, where any member of the public can be present."

I agree with them about this too: "Children take to nudity like ducks to water. We all know how much children like to run around with no clothes on. Children are rarely self-conscious when nude. It is only as they get older that they adopt some of the social stigmas associated with nudity. When children reach puberty, they often are embarrassed about the changes in their body. But those brought up in a naturist environment develop a healthy attitude to their bodies and realise that this is nothing to be ashamed of. At most clubs, no pressure is ever put on children to undress if they don’t want to."

But long story short a young child (male I assume) was in the male change rooms and he (or his parent at least) was upset at him seeing a naked man.

 

This may just be a cultural thing but from the article sounds like it is a general trend these days.

There's this thing called MTV, it's on all the time everywhere. Even naked people appear on breaking news once in a while.

Personally, I prefer my own room, I grew up conservative, and was the only male in a house with 5 women. I prefer to shower at home unless the facilities are enclosed, however when required I do what I must. My son and I change in public change rooms if required and I am sure he has seen other naked people other than the people in our immediate family. He seems happy and well adjusted even if I do say so myself. 

I am going to guess this is a cultural thing as well. 

I think it's a fuss about nothing, on both sides of the argument actually. People getting outraged about it, isn't any better than the guy getting upset in the first place. A bit of tolerance goes a long way.

Agree tolerance goes both ways. I have no problem with conservatives as long as conservatives don't try to impose their values on everyone else. Everybody should be free to go their own way as long as it doesn't hurt anyone else.

His complaint isn't really hurting anyone else either. People just want to get upset at everything.

Not a cultural thing. Some years back Bob McCoskie from Family First, and very much from godzone, complained that his 16-year old daughter had seen naked men on a fluff TV news item on naked rugby. He said he didn't know what to say to her afterwards.

It's not news. It's on Stuff - NZ's answer to the National Enquirer - and not for some time a bona fide news outlet.

In the absence of real reporting ability, they are so desperate for padding to fill column inches they often resort to summarising discussions on internet forums such as Reddit, and their very own Neighbourly.

The nutter in question is just a plain common-garden loony. In past years they would just attend meetings with Patricia Bartlett, write indignant letters rambling to councils and Ministers, and/or stand outside buildings with a placard. And be pretty much politely ignored by all and sundry.

However, when you don't have any real reporters left, and no organisations are giving you advertorial opinion pieces that you can run for free that day, you gotta fill them column inches somehow.

Stuff Article: Manawatū resident Shabbir Ahmed says adults should use private cubicles when getting undressed in public changing rooms where children are present.

This seems backward to me. Surely those who are uncomfortable around naked strangers should be using the family cubicles for changing, especially if they have kids. They are definitely in the minority in NZ and the private cubicles would be forever full if every person who got naked in a changing room was forced to use one.
