This is a comparison that I like.

To quote Faithless: "For tonight, God is a DJ". 'Youngsters' go clubbing on the weekend, just like worshippers go to church weekly. The DJ can move the masses emotionally and get 10-100 000 jumping up/down as one similarly to the olden days preacher whipping a whole congregation into a state of frenzy. Add to that the pill popping, snorting, smoking, injecting stimulants. Explains a lot about why people are so emotional about the person getting them there.

Just like the preacher from days of yore, if you can read the crowd you can carry them on a wave higher & higher to a point of climax, with the best of them being able to bring the crowd down again and repeat the cycle.

For the media to just call Avicii a DJ is misleading. According to Wikipedia, he is a a Swedish musician, DJ, remixer and record producer. He does far more than just play music like a traditional DJ would.

The modern definition of a DJ is shifting towards a producer who makes their own music (and DJs when performing live), rather than the traditional role of just playing pre recorded music live or on the radio.

I'm of the "radio" variety. Casey Kasem was a true legend, very talented. Rick Dees is someone else I would aspire to be too (apparently a real nice bloke in real life as well). Even Iain Stables I would call talented, although I admit he is not to everyone's taste.

Bill Lee, Mr. "Broadway Bill Lee" is one of the greatest. At least in the eyes of most radiojocks I know.

there are famous all kinds of people

- people who read (the news)

- people who talk (nek minit)

- people who cook (jamie oliver)

- people who do science (neil degrasse tyson)

- people who preach (carl lentz, justib bieber's pastor or joel osteen who appeared on oprah)

- people who take photos of themselves (kim kardashian)

in general people who talk rubbish or have shown off a talent can get famous

DJ in this context refers to the creation and performance of electronic music. Famous because tens of thousands of people.

In this scenario I would say it's the complete opposite - it's the actual music composer (the "DJ") that gets the credit, fame, and fortune for his own creations - not writing for someone else who then gets the credit for the song.

Sure it's mostly EDM and done on a computer but there is still a lot of skill required to put it altogether.

Noooo <s>, Carlos Santana could play an instrument, and bloody well at that, compose as well as orchestrating the music of his band.

DJ's are more like 'boy bands' that merely perform choreographed dancing and possibly can sing someone else's songs

Take a look at deadmau5. Just one electronic artist with just as much talent as Santana.
