I cancelled membership but can't stop receiving emails from them, even though I have unsubscribed every time I get one. A most annoying site! You have to give your real name and address so everyone knows exactly who you are and where you live every time you post. Now on Geekzone, people feel free to speak their minds (within reasonable limits) without the whole world knowing who they are and their street addresses!

That's not quite correct. You can hide your street number from everyone in your suburb. If you don't opt to make your profile available to nearby suburbs all that will show is your suburb.

I found them not to be particularly useful for my area, which is rural. At first I mostly received posts far away from where I live that had no relevance to me. Then more and more commercial advertising disguised as private posts began creeping in ("hey, I just found this really great deal at the Warehouse..."). I got fed up and shut it down. A good idea hijacked by commercial interests.

There email unsubscribes don't work and judging by the number of complaints I've seen online, they don't care

Its run by Stuff.co.nz so you get everything (and I mean everything), spammed to you.

Ive had to update my email preferences multiple times but I still get emails saying 'someone in my neighbourhood needs help' and its simply advertising pushed through by stuff initiatives.

I think the masses have moved towards facebook community groups IMHO.

It has its place, but you will be inundated with email...

Then you get sponsored posts....

Its good that you have to address verify but I think Stuff has stuffed it by going rouge on the sponsor posts, emails galore and thats perhaps peeved off users so they no longer use it as much as they did.

I subscribed last year, out of curiosity.

Big mistake.

I took an instant dislike to all the local (ultra)trivia and gossip, and tried to unsubscribe ... five times to date (acknowledged each time).

It stops for a few weeks, then comes back.

Avoid.

I never unsubscribed but I turned off each of the categories separately and haven't had a thing from them since. This might work for others.

I joined, seemed like a good idea, but it often gets into rabid talk-back style stuff, with people being pretty nasty to others that don't agree with them. Racist, too. I'm still in for the occasional interesting discussion (before it goes off all over the place). But generally, I really dislike it, has no real value at all.

Rubbish.

Most of the email is spam, full of adverts and very little actual community content. The content that wasn't adverts was very broad e.g. same city not same actual area I live in.

I have found it to be useful, yes there are the whingers and conspiracy nuts, but that happens with every site, I have gto rid of stuff on there and got me a nice glasshouse (3.6m x 3.5m) , haven't noticed being spammed, bit there again i tend to turn emails off for most sections/things when i set up the account

I've never joined - it's annoying in a similar way to Quora. Why does it need a separate login additional to the one used to access Stuff comments?

Facebook doesn't actually have a locality-based model and, AFAIK, has none of these features:

Members are address-verified so you are limited to your actual neighbourhood
There are formal links to local organisations:
- Community newspapers (owned by the same owners as Neighbourly)
- Local businesses and organisations
- Local authorities/councils
- Civil Defence and emergency information
Urgent Alert messages e.g. emergency alerts

Neighbourly.co.nz is owned by Fairfax Media, an Australasian company, so it does have an emphasis on making money as a channel for local businesses, which is one reason why I don't use it myself. But if that is what you want then that is another benefit.
