Hi folks.

Looking at registering with Neighbourly, but a little unsure on the pros and cons of doing so.

A little unsure about privacy issues.

Would welcome comments from GZ members who are on Neighbourly.

Cheers.

I just joined yesterday actually. Privacy, yes, not sure on that. I can see all the names and addresses. But, does that matter? As long as there are no "yay, I'm off to Hawaii tomorrow" I guess its fine.

You can opt to have the street number not displayed but it still displays the street name

You can choose to hide your address.

I use it a fair bit, quite handy for neighbourhood issues, and getting rid of stuff for free or cheap (instead of putting it at the side of the road). Does tend to attract wingers with lots of free time though

I was part of them and then pulled out due to the constant moaning about stuff. So and so is doing this, the kids from x house make to much noise. To many people with to much time on their hands posting to much crap.

We have gotten to know our direct neighbours very well and we always watch out for each other.

my 2 cents

I was with Neighbourly, but after an incident last year I cancelled my membership.

Person posted about a serious assault that took place on a school bus her daughter was on. My son takes that same school bus, but as the bus services 2 schools, the alleged assualt happened in between the 2 schools, so son wasn't on-board at that time.

Myself along with a number of other concerned parents contacted the principals of the 2 schools to make them aware of the post and alledged assault, and ensure help was being sought for the assaulted child. The evening and the following day an investigation was held; with several students and bus company driver being interviewed.

Principal contacted me during the investigation saying nobody is aware of any assault. I also noticed that the post was also removed from Neighbourly that day.

I contacted our local Neighbourly coordinator letting her know of what was turning out to be a false post which had wasted school time and resources and suggested that the original poster should be stood down for a short time or banned. Was told not her job to moderate posts or to ban people. She also couldn't tell me who deleted the post and that I should contact the Neighbourly team at Stuff directly if I had any concerns.

Maybe it was because I was suckered in by the false post, but I wasn't happy so I decided to just cancel my membership instead.

So its another Facebook like system where noone cares who gets hurt/loses money etc and rumor mongers rule. No thanks, I'm pretty much off Facebook now due to such culture.

Yes but you don't post stuff on phonebooks, do you?

Yeah, where I am is suppose to be a good community etc, on the outside it appears it is, but once your'e in the FB groups, its a toxic area full of backstabbers,  **** stirrers and scam artists. Yes, there are a lot of genuine nice people, but slowly getting out numbered.

Thanks for the replies. Looks like there are good and bad experiences. I might sign up, disclosing minimal information, and see how it goes for a few weeks.
