You're right, a mixture of Su-33's, Yak-38s and 41s actually, and in this timeline the Project Kahu was fast tracked and, so it gives all Skyhawks comparable eyes and ears abilitiy of F-16s and upgraded armament. HOWEVER in saying that yeah you're still right. In the story they are joined by the air wing of the USS Carl Vinson which is the last US carrier in the pacific. So it balances it out alot more. :)

A4K's would have a fair chance against the SU33's of the day providing a sufficient supply of aim-7 sparrow and sidewinders was available. The biggest threat would actually be the long range destruction of Whenuapai and Ohakea by sub launched cruse missile beforehand. I would imagine that would be the first move in any attack.

The Mig's would never reach here (Mig 29's are short range, really only useful in Europe). In flight refueled SU-27's and more likely carrier launched SU-33's would be the most likely opponent.

Yep, it's a combo of SU-33's and Yak 38 and 41s all carrier launched. Yeah I made a big screw up having after burners in there! Got told that shortly after I put that first teaser out lol. I did however make sure the humber of Skyhawks I used were in fact the amount that were in service of both No 2 and 75 Squadrons ,or at least reportedly, I combed over a lot of websites to try and get this accurate. In this timeline the Soviet Union begins adopting a more belligerent stance from 1986, so my assumption is western countries, such as NZ would increase defense budgets and also be a lot more vigilant on making sure their fighters are all ready and in service, also in this timeline all squadrons are moved to Whenuapai, as the threat is to Auckland and the Hauraki Gulf area.

Aside from all that, really happy you like it!! Means a lot coming from an ex-airforce member!! Were you serving around 89? And that is very interesting about the nuclear stuff too!!

Yeah that would make a lot of sense, in this story as best as I can imagine they would be covering the US West and East coasts the GIUK gap and the East Coast of Aussie, the US pacific fleet remnant coming to Auckland isn't anticipated by the Soviets due to the fall of ANZUS. Their carrier force is in pursuit of the escaping US carrier, so they'd arrive after the Americans get here.

However in saying that, did NZ possess any sort've anti cruise missile screen?

Nothing whatsoever, that was always a glaring omission.

Its kind like the Falklands war, when the British landed their Hawk missiles took so long to setup as to be effectively useless. This gave the Argentinians free reign until the carrier launched Harriers were able to arrive and provide air cover.

Nothing whatsoever, that was always a glaring omission.

Its kind like the Falklands war, when the British landed their Hawk missiles took so long to setup as to be effectively useless. This gave the Argentinians free reign until the carrier launched Harriers were able to arrive and provide air cover.

I shall need to think of a reason why the soviets don't or are unable do this. lol

Well, those cruse missiles are very expensive and even the USA has a very limited supply. For example if you look at what the Russians have recently done in Syria they tested a bunch of cruse missiles at the outset, and from there on in pretty much all the weapons they have used (even on SU-34's) are WWII style dumb bombs. If there has already been an ongoing conflict then it is quite viable all advanced weapons would have already been used. This significantly levels the playing field for us as such.

An interesting read kind of related to this topic is Smith's Dream by CK Stead. It's set in a totalitarian, post revolutionary NZ around the 1980's. Also depicted in the film Sleeping Dogs.

There are two editions of the book with different endings. The second edition was written following critical reception of the first.

And of course Red Dawn is great film depicting invasion of US in the 1980s. Or the Tomorrow when the war began is young adult series set in Aussie.
