Although I don't think it is just tourists that are the problem. I think the number of people we are letting in is also a major problem. Not only has it made houses too expensive for those kiwis already living here, but it has meant urban sprawl. I get that some companies are calling out for workers, especially low paid ones. But that sort of thing is cyclical. When the recession hits, we are likely go to end up with a heap of people unemployed, so IMO it is false economy to be letting in so many people. All it is doing is making some people a heck of a lot of money, largely from housing.

According to Stats NZ

"Consequently, its (NZ's) population density is relatively low, at 15 people per square kilometre – less than half the OECD average and higher than only Australia, Iceland, Canada and Norway."

I guess 'the hurricane state' or 'oversize anaconda state' or 'giant alligator in your swimming pool state' or 'election-throwing state' don't quite have the same ring, to say nothing of 'baptist fundamentalist racist anti-muslim state'.

New Zealand: It's 100% not Australia (And we don't spend all of our time comparing ourselves to Australia, nor do we report on every little thing that happens in Australia, that's Fiji that does that, yea Fiji.)

The country might be able to "sustain a higher population" or it could be argued that there may be economic benefit from having a higher population, but to say that NZ is "under populated" is merely an opinion.

The major problem NZ has, is that we have allowed the population to increase so much, but we haven't invested in infrastructure and services for those people. So we need more hospitals, more expensive roads and tunnels/bridges were we have greater urban intensification, as well as more public transport. We are an ambulance at the bottom of the cliff society, so nothing gets done until there is a problem, rather than actually planning for the population growth.

100% Pure is now a couple of decades old, and I don't think it is very relevant these days, especially due to the state of our rivers and streams, and the state of overcrowding, where we lack enough housing. Also the eyesores we see built in natural environment, and some developments have encroached into some of these scenic views. We are also still allowing prime productive land to be taken out of production, for the use with HAIL activities. I believe the slogan is mainly supposed to refer to our natural environment, and scenery. Pure mean unadulterated, and 100% Pure emphasizes that, which isn't the case these days IMO.

I thought at one stage they were using 'Middle Earth' as a slogan. But that is probably dated these days. Many towns have slogans which may be appropriate, and have spent thousands coming up with them, so a decent slogan may already exist.

Pretty much this IMO. I'd be interested in some stats covering how much of our natural beauty, etc has been lost due to tourists, immigration and population growth combined vs the farming industry....

Pretty much this IMO. I'd be interested in some stats covering how much of our natural beauty, etc has been lost due to tourists, immigration and population growth combined vs the farming industry....

To some people - including a few tourists I expect - nothing epitomises natural beauty more than a paddock full of cows grazing.

Except perhaps sheep - a good % of the tourist attractions here seem to be devoted to sheep worship.

Depends on the definition, as some of that beauty could be defined as farmland, which much was once covered by bush before man landed in NZ. Not sure if we are doing much to restore that bush either.

A lot of productive land is taken out of the NZ economy for new subdivisions etc.
