Also very disappointed with this in my news feed this morning :/

May have uttered <a bad word> a little too loudly...

Still, agree this has gotta be a fat target for Amazon or Netflix.

Having said that though, I'm still truly surprised that none of the digital networks have managed to get Joss Whedon to resurrect Firefly - especially given the appetite for sci-fi/fantasy/westerns type material at the mo.

Still, comes down to people paying to watch right? - illegal downloads don't count towards ratings folks - and that is particularly stark in this case (given SyFy's lack of digital rights).

Re Firefly, well that boat well and truly sailed years ago. the cast is older, and too busy with other projects .

If there was to be a new Firefly it would almost certainly have to be a complete reboot. And Firefly never actually pulled the numbers to justfy that. Of course, maybe if the network had not shown the episodes out of all order....

As far as I am aware there is currently no way to legally watch season 3 in NZ, not sure about other countries. The result is that many people who would be happy to pay for it don't, because they don't want to wait a year until it is a available legally.

I bought the first series from uk on Blu-ray following an article saying if you like a series buy it physically too which shows interest and hopefully help series continue. Ie avoid the Firefly experience.

I would happily buy it, once completed. I don't want shelves full of blu-rays for shows that never got finished. And in this case I don't know that it would have helped much given SyFy's very limited distribution rights - do they even get any of the blu-ray profits.

Sounds like SyFy have just fallen behind the times and are relying on an outdated model of broadcast television, and wondering why they aren't making money on good shows.

It was Alcon entertainment (the IP holder) who was clinging to an outdated model, they refused to let SyFy have digital broadcast rights so SyFy was stuck with Live cast only and subsequently a lack of Viewers.

I imagine it will turn up on Sky Box Sets and Neon once the season has completed. It obviously hasnt been popular enough for Sky to fast track it as fast as some of the other US shows it offers on Neon. Probably because Sky stuffed it from The Zone to Box Sets.

Netflix NZ will likely offer S3 in Nov (12 months after S2 became available). Its another post-broadcast window offering from Netflix's point of view.

Yeah, given how expensive quality scifi is to produce (The Expanse's production values are pretty damn good, just compare it Killjoys for example.), I am very surprised SyFy signed on the dotted line with such limited rights. its not like its SyFy's first rodeo. And its been obvious for at least the last 5 years that streaming is where its at.

One upshot is, that Alcon owns ALL the IP , including sets, digital modelling etc. So this should make it an easier deal, any studio picking it up won't be in for buying the rights out. I guess we will find out how serious Alcon are about saving the series.

Oh bugger! love this show.

Agree with everyone else about hoping it will get picked up. It does have an existing large fan base.

IMDb = 8.3/10

Rotten Tomatoes = 90%

Metacritic = 65%

What is it? about 8 or 9 books in the series - that is a lot of original content.

Thinking along those lines it would be a good pick up for Apple original content, who is soon to be the new player on the block. Been reading some interesting articles about original content produces: Apple (reportedly slated) $1billion while Netflix (reportedly planning) $8 billion. So Apple is gonna have to up their spending, they can afford it. (Jeez they can afford to buy out ANY of the existing players for that matter).

Even though I am an Apple devotee, the only down side I see with Apple is they might restrict their subscription service to their Apple TV box (like they did with iTunes originally) which would be a very bad business decision. But we can speculate all we want about Apple and this new market (for Apple that is) as Apple is notorious for not announcing till the very last minute AND changing the existing paradigm in doing so.

Whilst the difficult we can do immediately, the impossible takes a bit longer. However, miracles you will have to wait for.

I think that's it. If it was bought, that cost plus production has to be sold. NF could buy it, but that goes into the content bucket, it wont attract many new subs, so it becomes just another cost. It may be the bees knees for a few eyes, but the ratings dont suggest it will be a coup by whoever picks it up (thus generating kudos and reputation). It may be a great buy but if NF has enough content to satisfy subscribers, they may not see a need to add more. As the "content is great" pool, is already full at the moment.

I've been really enjoying The Expanse, although it was a bit slow in places. My other half got sick of it.

Science Fiction and fantasy seem to struggle with FTA broadcasting.

I seem to have a knack for liking shows that get cancelled and the last show is typically an end of season cliff hanger

I really liked Dominion. I was enjoying Hunters (another Sy-Fy fail). I was enjoying Marco Polo. If the curse continues Stranger Things will be next for the chop.

Once upon a time, in a land far away, there were just a few series. Dallas, et al Hugely popular and there was always one or two such series on. These days, there are so many shows there will be good ones you will never get to hear of, the place is awash with content. Less eyeballs per series despite the quality.

Yeah, my wife is like that, if a show looks good, she checks how long its been around,.... less then 3 seasons and its avoided.

Me on the other hand, have this curse of getting into a TV series, only to have it canned after a single season or two... :(

Amazon have the streaming rights to the show, it's unlikely anyone but Amazon would pick it up because of that.

Only PPV rights as they have for most US programs that are OTA broadcast TV or cable . Season three is US$29.99 for the season pass.
