If you have a library nearby, and have a library card, they give access to Ancestry.com within the library for free, it may be a great way to find more about them. Unfortunately I only have the US membership as I'm from the US, but often use the library for ancestors outside of the US. Hopefully you can find them!

Kiwifruta:

Hi @Wheelbarrow01
Thanks for the extra info, I googled his name but didn't find what you found. Do you have a link to the family tree website? Would love to get in contact with relatives.

I also have his parents' names. Peter Nelson (mostly likely Nielsen) and Karen Christiansen, but whether these are their actual names or somebody's anglicised versions of their names I don't know. I'm not aware of them being in NZ, so I expect that they would have kept their Danish spellings. Seems worthwhile following up with the death certificate if I don't get any luck through that other website.

If you google "niels christiansen nelson" (including the quotation marks) you should get the same results I got.

The family tree page is here: https://www.myheritage.com/site-family-tree-142724731/burgess?indID=1000138 Once the page opens, type his name into the "find a person" box on the right side of the page. All his details will come up on the left side of the page, including the names of his 10 (!!) children.

Interestingly if you click on his wife's avatar on that page, the family tree goes back a further 6 generations to 1653, complete with names etc.

Thanks @Wheelbarrow01, finally got the chance today to look at the link. What a great find, thank you. I've sent a message to one of the contributors of that family tree. Thanks for helping me connect. :-)

One of them got back to me, she happens to be on holiday in Tauranga, right where I live. Fortunate timing. We are going to meet up. Thanks for your work everyone.

Just an update had a great meeting with the person who submitted my great great grandfather’s family to my heritage. She had photos although not of my direct ancestors.

Also through papers past I found a newspaper photo of Niels and Ane’s golden wedding anniversary announcement Click to see full size

I have a print out of their marriage document which didn’t add details about their danish origins nor parents. I’ll try his death certificate. Thanks for all your help.
