Hi

My great grandfather is buried there and I'd be ever so grateful if someone could take a photo of his gravestone so I can add it to my genealogy records.

These are the details I have

Niel Christiansen Nelson
Birth: unknown
Death: 29 Oct 1940
Burial: Hillsborough Cemetery, Hillsborough, Auckland Council, Auckland, New Zealand
Plot: Area 4 Block O Lot No 870
Memorial #: 165873211
Gravesite Details Aged 86
Created by: Cyndi (47314338)
Added: 22 Jun 2016
URL: https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/165873211
Citation: Find A Grave, database and images (https://www.findagrave.com : accessed 12 June 2018), memorial page for Niel Christiansen Nelson (unknown–29 Oct 1940), Find A Grave Memorial no. 165873211, citing Hillsborough Cemetery, Hillsborough, Auckland Council, Auckland, New Zealand ; Maintained by Cyndi (contributor 47314338) .

I live in Tauranga and frequent Hamilton a lot, so if you need me to do some genealogical work in either place, I can return the favour.

Cheers

Dwayne

I'm about a half hour from there, and don't have much going today, I'll see if I can pop out there and find it for you. It looks like a large cemetery so I'll have to see if I can find a way to narrow down the location within the cemetery. He's not listed in billiongraves unfortunately.

Correction he is my great great grandfather.

I’m keen to get his date of birth and Danish birth name so I can match it up with Danish records.

Hi @Kiwifruta I just PM'd you a link to the photos. I resized them to 1024 on the long edge just to keep the file size down. If you'd like the raw images let me know.

Cheers

I enjoy being able to help, I'm sure someone else would have done the same had I not been able to.

It's all good, I enjoyed getting out, and I've not seen many cemeteries in New Zealand. I used to photograph a lot of them in the states when I lived there.

I am not sure if it helps, but the online NZ historical births, deaths & marriages website records his name at date of death as Niels with an S on the end?

Have you ordered a copy of his death certificate? If not, you can do so here. If you are lucky, that certificate may have his date of birth recorded, but not only that it may also have his parents' full names which may assist in tracking back with Danish records.

[EDIT: I just googled "Niels Christiansen Nelson" and came up with a couple of hits, most notably here and here.

And I just found a family tree website which records as follows:

Niels Christiansen NELSON

Birth: Denmark, March 31, 1853

Naturalised in 1890 in Wellington. Name angliicised from NIELSEN to NELSON. Burried in Hillsborough Cemetery, Area 4, Block 0, Lot No 870

Occupation: Butcher (Gear Meat co, Petone), Farmer (Eastport Rd, Waihau)

Married to Ane Sine Nelson (Nee Sorensen) Spet 17 1878, Wellington

Hi @Wheelbarrow01
Thanks for the extra info, I googled his name but didn't find what you found. Do you have a link to the family tree website? Would love to get in contact with relatives.

I also have his parents' names. Peter Nelson (mostly likely Nielsen) and Karen Christiansen, but whether these are their actual names or somebody's anglicised versions of their names I don't know. I'm not aware of them being in NZ, so I expect that they would have kept their Danish spellings. Seems worthwhile following up with the death certificate if I don't get any luck through that other website.
