My partner has one of those paywave cards. One time she was charged twice for a taxi ride. Other than that I don't think she's had any issues with it.

I have a normal EFTPOS card. Suits me fine, I have no wish to get a paywave card. I use either EFTPOS, cash or internet banking to pay for things.

Countdown have now also stopped Mastercard paywave transactions, they stopped after they did their upgrade , Visa cards still work. No one could tell me why they suddenly stopped working.

Common sense is not as common as you think.

Handsomedan:

My gut feeling is that BK are feeling the pinch and are looking for any way to reduce the costs of running their stores (downsize products, reduce staff, clean less often etc) and contactless would cost them thousands a year, so it's an obvious target.

Walking into a McD's vs a BK today is a very interesting experience,

McD have embraced self ordering with gusto, there are screens all around the store with a heavy concentration of cash less payment options, most of the staff are making the food/cleaning etc, you might find a single cashier with a till if you are lucky...

BK on the other hand is still like the 1990s, there are queues in front of the menu boards with an operator having to take order and deal with payments, (and depending on how many staff are on, they also have to cook and serve the food)

What advantages (if any) does apple pay offer?

Same as paywave, but in your phone - thus likely more handy to use.

i use Andriod pay for 99% of my paywave. have one place where it intermittently works, My local gas station.

Normal paywave goes through all the time here though.

1) Pay for things without your wallet (where PayWave is accepted)

2) Bragging rights[?]

I find Apple Pay a lot easier as I don't have to reach for my wallet or if I don't have my Wallet on me.

Ok. I remember my partner's niece kinda bragging that she had apple pay on her fancy phone awhile back.

I've never owned any apple products and I won't use a cellphone because I dislike them. EFTPOS is fine for me. However it's good that there are several different payment methods to suit different tastes.

Last Year i had the unfortunate mistake of forgetting my wallet...

Having AndriodPay was the best thing for this. could just use that all day for lunch etc.

Now days, my rf-id for the car is in it... so i'll never leave the home without my wallet....

Usecase still exists though :)

This may be something to do with Mastercard maybe backing out of the New Zealand Market. ANZ have stopped issuing Mastercards and have switched to Visia I think all banks may be doing this.

Their app appears to have the ability to order through it, but I've never tried it to see how smooth it is.

The lack of paywave really annoys me - I often only have my phone handy and wallet is in bag (or sometimes even in bag in boot)

Or sometimes if I go for a walk or run I'll only have phone and no wallet. They just lose a sale in this case...

Similar thing happened to me. Got double charged by Mc Donalds. The second transaction happened the next day when I wasn't anywhere near that Mc Donalds store.

Thanks for the reminder to lodge a dispute against that transaction. Paywave is now permanently disabled on my cards. As I have better things to do than chase up double transactions and get them reversed. At least with EFTPOS, you always have to enter your PIN. And I have memorized the CVV numbers on my credit cards, and scratched them off the cards. So even if my physical credit cards got stolen, it would be difficult for a thief to use them.

to add on what others have said...

Added security. While it will detect a nfc reader when you put the phone over a terminal, it doesn't actually send any info to the terminal via nfc till you approve it via finger print or pin code (on the phone). If someone was to steal your phone, unless they knew your pin code or could fake your finger print, it should stay secure, though you should still wipe your phone remotely or call your bank to cancel the card.

I'll also add that it is fantastic if you ever need to cancel your Credit card, (Lost, stolen, fraud).... while it can take days for new cards to arrive, it only takes a few seconds for them to reissue the card over apple pay.
