     >I have used it. But I would prefer they just reduced the rate. IMO it leads to people just wasting power. I know someone who just turned on every light, heater, dryer etc for 4 hours<

Yeah, we thought about that too, but figured that at this time of the year the hydro-lakes would be full and probably spilling-over (always bad press) … so the power companies would be getting very good rates for dispersing some of that, as well as satisfying customers and preventing defection to another supplier.

How much is this actually worth though?  Or is it just a 'feel good' promotion?  4 hours normal electricity use for us is lucky to be $5 - $6.  Hardly worth getting excited about is it?

Interesting side-bar … Marlborough Lines has just bought Peter Yealands Wines outright …. maybe they have a power generation plant that runs on grapes? tongue-out

I think they've done a good job on the EnergyIQ app.

Must disagree on that. The old app was better for me. We have two houses both on the same section and account with electricity and LPG. With the old app I could swap between the individual properties but with the new app I cannot.

I doubt I would notice 4 hours difference in the bill in a month!

I had a similar offer from Mercury last month but it was for a whole day.

Got up in the morning and had the heat pump running all day. Wife was complaining it was getting too hot so I told her to take some clothes off. Dryer was running right up until midnight.

Used $30 in power that day.

I wouldn't assume that. According to the Flick app, at midday on a rainy & windy Sunday, 10% of NZ's electricity is coming from gas. Hydro is running at about 2/3rds of max generation and wind around 3/4's of max generation.

THIS is interesting, particularly the current hydro situation (Transpower site and data).

I've often wondered why it is that when I drive past a wind turbine installation, it is very rare that 100% of the turbines are actually functioning.

Of course some could be broken, but it always seems to be too many for that to be the explanation.

I'm aiming to draw over 20kw/hr peak (12kw/hr continuous) on my Power Shout tomorrow (6pm to 10pm). The preferred store of power I use is the concrete slab heating.

Better use it before I lose it - July will end soon.

Nothing is ever free. We are paying way to much for our energy in this country. Sooner see a reduction in tariffs rather than seeing people get so excited with a free $2 of power!!!

I hope this doesn't become the norm. The student area in Dunedin has been having power cuts which the lines company has blamed on the hour of free power.

I see the free power use from a different perspective. It's a great way for the lines and electricity providers to "Stress test" and it's not like everyone has their power use of free power hours at the same time.

IMO, I find NZ has far too many power retailers for the population of the country. Too many that leads to inefficiencies so users are only dreaming that power prices will be cheaper. I mean you can choose as many different power retailers in NZ as petro stations for your car.

Electric Kiwi isn't cheaper because they don't do a discount so you try to cramp most of your electricity use at 1 hour in the 'off peak' period. I'm not sure how this suits the typical family as meals are cooked at specific times of the day.
