@tdgeek that's not how fractions work.  35 billion is 1/3 of his overall wealth.  So when looking at it in real terms it's a tiny fraction of his overall wealth.

I see 35 bill as a lot, but thats obvious. 1/3 is a lot too. If the small fraction was 1/8 I'd agree. Having said that giving away 9/10 if you are Bill Gates is massively easier than the masses giving away 1/10

All in one's interpretation. I would have called that a large fraction myself!

I guess it comes down to the impact on the individual's lifestyle.  There's a chance he'd make $35 billion in interest each year on his $95 billion total which means the impact is very low for him.  But all I'm saying in the end is that people hold up one person over another as being a paragon of virtue in one way or another, but when you look at the situation for what it is the reality is somewhat different.  That said, anyone giving away that much money is pretty awesome.... I just think when all is tallied we'd probably find Steve Jobs contributed a significant amount to charities etc too, as well as creating an industry out of thin air 10 years ago with the app store which has created jobs and bought many people a house and a much better lifestyle than they had before, with a very low barrier to entry :)

You're right. the added value of jobs, and I bet many workers were convinced, cajoled into buying a few shares by the marketing genius, and did well

Steve Jobs - Brilliant but flawed

Maybe it's a little less known that his father is from Syria and emigrated to the Michigan area. Fairly large population of Arab descent in the area apparently. His father says he was banned by Jobs grandfather from marrying his mother due to religion. Many years ago obviously. Anyway.. it doesn't stop there either..

Bill and Melinda Gates have said that they intend to leave their three children $10 million each as their inheritance. With only $30 million kept in the family, they appear to be on a course to give away about 99.96 percent of their wealth

I think the "fraction" there is that they'll only keep (to pass on to their kids) 1/2500 of their wealth - or IOW donate 2499/2500 to charity.

Cloud spending continues to surge globally, but most organisations haven’t made the changes necessary to maximise the value and cost-efficiency benefits of their cloud investments. Download the whitepaper From Overspend to Advantage now.

Yeah wasn't intending to suggest the opposite. Anyway oops looks I got some parts of that story horribly wrong or maybe it's always in progress:

Wikipedia might be more up to date..

Being mega successful as Gates and Jobs are/were is the result of  combination of factors, different in every case.

Take Gates for example. If Gary Kildall of CP/M fame had gone to a meeting with IBM instead of going sailing we might be talking about him now instead of Gates, who knows? So a slice of luck there. However BG then went on to maximise his opportunities which is probably one of the key traits of all the mega successful.

I went to a seminar where BG was the main speaker once and was sitting right at the back by the entrance to the theatre. BG came in late and was standing right next to where I was sitting when he said to one of the organisers something along the lines of 'shall I just go straight on'. He did and spoke for 90 minutes in front of a couple of thousand people without notes of any kind and without stuttering or fluffing his lines. Mighty impressive.

If I was to bet on who will be leading the pack in 20 years time I'd probably plump for Google/Alphabet. Can't see it being Apple.

Good documentary recently about Gates and Jobs. One person on the documentary commented that while Bill Gates set up the Gates Foundation Steve Jobs had not given a cent to charity. If this is true pretty much sums it up for me.

I tend to agree, but historically Apple have tended to chase gross margin rather than market share and it has worked pretty well for them commercially.

He is worth a lot less and he gave via private companies that do not have to disclose. Ask Bono Vox and his wife

Good salesman is a somewhat reductionist view. At the very least a huge understatement.
