You are a pessimist. I bet it happens faster than you think.

Crosses "Notre Dame cathedral" off bucket list.

Depends how long you live I guess. I don't see it being rebuilt in my life time.

Not really. France isnt exactly in a stable worker situation right now and if you look at other similar construction projects like the Sagrada Familia....

Check out how long it took us to even make a decision on our Catherdral! That's before work even began. This will be SO much more complex than that.

What's the bet the Notre Dame rebuild is done and open to the public before Christchurch Cathedral restoration even starts....

I've been paying for that out of my rates for a year already and work has still not started. But I digress....

I see the family that owns the Gucci brand (amongst others) has pledged 100 million Euros to the rebuild. That's a pretty good start.

I imagine it'll cost a lot more than that, but if money is not an issue, it will be done pretty fast I think (still many years).

100M wouldn't put a dent in it I don't think. But I agree it's a good start.

They had significant difficulty getting the funds together for the restoration, and this is a signficantly bigger project. The costs will be astronomical.

Sometimes I wonder if the money would be better spent somewhere else. Sacrilege I know.

Seen it many times. A great shame, but it is a building and can therefore be...rebuilt.

Windsor Castle and York Minster are proof of that, among others.

I bet Chinese could rebuild it within shortest period of time for the exchange of what-they-need. Look at their cities and motorways.

This is not similar. Sagrada Familia was always unfinished. Notre Dame was a finished work for a long time.

It's been "trying" to be finished many times and the deadlines have slipped over and over again. It's complex rebuilding something of these ages.

You are also a rationalist. You count how many bricks will be needed and how much they cost and how much work is required to put them all together. The French are a highly emotional people and Notre Dame is an essential part of the national identity. It can't in any way be compared to Christchurch. It won't take them any time at all to make a decision about it and the pace of reconstruction will leave you dizzy.

Many of the Roof Vaults appear to remain intact, thus limiting much of the damage to the upper exterior roof and spire sections,

The big question now it how stable are they?  - they will have tonnes of burnt beams and melted lead sitting on them, making them totally unsafe...

10 years ago damage like this would have only been able to be examined from helicopters at a distance,

today they will have drones flying all over this to get an accurate gauge of the damage to the unburnt sectoins

They certainly won't spend 25 years "consulting" about what to do, that is for sure! When they want to do public works in France, they just get on with it. For example, a friend's mother lost her family farm when they were building a new railway line for the TGV. In essence, they knocked on the door, said "We need this land. Here is a large cheque. Be gone by next month please. Thank you for your contribution to the glory of France."
