I'll never forget one of the real documentaries they showed you at school to describe the disaster.

Some of those scenes and memories won't ever go away (the guys running up to the edge of the roof with a shovel with hardly any protection, only to later be found with burns and puking their insides out). And the rows and rows of busses and military equipment they evacuated people with only to themselves be totally radiated.

You have a poor memory! We were requested to wear long sleeves/pants, we carried geiger counters, we had to pass through (ancient) radiation detectors on leaving the zone, people are only allowed in the zone for a certain period of time, etc etc

Old man memory or radiation damaged memory?

if your radiation is too high will you be prevented from leaving?

They did say someone's pants got contaminated from sitting on the ground so they got confiscated.

Keen for Episode 2. Kinda wish HBO just dumped all 5 episodes at once. I feel like it would have played better if you binged them all at once.

Watched the first episode last night. I was 11 when this happened. It was the first true global news event I remember, shortly followed in '88 by the Lockerbie disaster. Looking forward to the remainder of the series

This series is amazing and terrible and horrific. If it’s even only approximately true - what a disaster. Just so sad and tragic. Excellent production value and good acting.

Being a docu-drama it's a bit hard to tell fact from fiction of course. Please can anyone recommend a book (there's lots to choose from) and documentary that provides a good factual description of what took place (both the incident and the aftermath).

Sometimes I use big words I don't always fully understand in an effort to make myself sound more photosynthesis.

Watched Ep 1 and 2

Am amazed at the sense of continuous dread they managed to bestow just with the soundtrack...

A pity they had to compress all the scientists into one amalgamated character, I s'pose it was a necessary evil due to time constraints

Yes, Chernobyl Notebook by Grigoriy Medvedev (available on Kindle). Medvedev was Deputy Chief Engineer at unit no. 1 in the 70s and at the time of the disaster was high up in the energy department that oversaw plant construction and regulation. He was sent to Chernobyl soon after the event to investigate. As I haven't seen him turn up yet in the series it's possible he is wrapped up in the characters of the professor and the scientist.

His book is technical but understandable to anyone with undergraduate understanding of physics and engineering and includes first hand accounts of a lot of the worst parts of it. I highly recommend it.

Well worth listening to "The Chernobyl Podcast" which discusses each episode with the writer. Good insight into what was real and what was compressed / dramatised / aggregated for transition to TV.
