I am not sure whether vaccines were available for some of those when I was a child - mothers used to promptly whip you round to visit someone else's child who had those diseases on the basis that getting them whilst young gave you immunity and was generally much less bad than getting them as adults.

Dairyxox: Wifi - I was thinking the other day how significant this is worldwide.

I'd support this.  Wifi is so pervasive, and while it means much less without the internet behind it, it strikes me how transformative wifi has been to the way we do so many things.  Wired (ironically) had an interesting article a couple of weeks back about the 20 year anniversary of wifi (as we know it).  https://www.wired.com/story/how-wi-fi-almost-didnt-happen/  I read that and then tried to remember the time before wifi.  I've had the internet since the mid-90s, but I struggled to remember when wifi inveigled it's way into my home.  I worked out I've only had a wifi router for about 10 years, but it feels like so much longer.  It was weird to think back to a time (not that long ago) when I had broadband (256k, but still technically broadband), but the only way to use it was to use a desktop PC.  So many devices become so much less useful (or more expensive to use) without wifi.

If we're talking about something smaller than an international protocol like wifi or infrastructure like the internet, then an invention that makes my day are my wireless earbuds.  They're cheap (incredibly so), but almost indispensable to me in my daily routines.  On the occasions when I forget to take them to work with me, the day becomes that little bit harder.  They're like the grease that keeps the engine of my day running smoothly...

Probably the drugs were a "discovery" more than an "invention" (the leather rag was an invention).

General anaesthesia may have been used in China in 300BC.
