There is a saying that something is the greatest idea since sliced bread. I actually prefer unsliced bread most of the time, but there are many other things that have made my life much more satisfying than it would have been without them. High on my list is the wireless remote control with mute button. In my childhood such a thing would have been unknown, but commercials in those days were also a lot less irritating. These days commercials are not the only things on TV that annoy me, though the shouty NZ ones that treat people like morons are certainly aggravating. There are also some people that I simply can't stand, like CNN's Richard Quest. The ability to silence these at the press of a button from my permanent place on the couch is a godsend. It gives me a real thrill of power.

So what are some other gadget inventions that have added value to your life? Could you live without your robot vaccum cleaner?

>Could you live without your robot vaccum cleaner?

absolutely not. I don't know why I did not bought it years ago.

Full list:

1. Internet (I make my living out of it)

All of the rest are not in order, but I don't imaging my life without these
 - cars
 - TV
 - microwave (I might not use it for days, but when needed I just have no clue how to heat something without it)
 - washing machine
 - dishwasher
 - phones
 - fridge (I remember as a kid we have very old and small fridge which was not very efficient, so we have to use cellar and fill it with snow during winter which would last a year!)
 - remote control home appliances !!! another big thing
 - many more

I would have said remote control if you asked me this three years ago. But I rarely use mine nowadays. I agree with Rikkitic's hatred of ads, which is why I have basically given up on Freeview entirely (I have probably watched between one and two hours of FTA TV in the last three months*, and haven't watched any of the Sky channels that interrupt shows with advertising in that time). Between streaming TV (Netflix & Lightbox), my plex server, and a couple of the ad free Sky channels what little TV I watch is free of ad breaks.

At the moment, my number favourite invention, by a country mile, is the internet. It's indispensable for work and for leisure.

Number two would be the cellphone. I use it to send messages and photos to people, to control a bunch of my household appliances (Music system, lighting, streaming services). Very occasionally, I also use it to make calls.

Number three would be my Google Home speakers. They are inexpensive (particularly the mini) and I have blanketed most of the house with them. They have taken over much of what I used to use the remote control for (pausing TV etc). They also control much of my music listening, some of the lighting, give me my morning news fix, tell me the weather etc. As I update my technology, I can only see their importance in controlling the house growing.

Number four is the dishwasher. It takes a lot of drudgery out of my life.

* In fact the aerial to my living room TV hasn't worked since Christmas. I'm pretty sure it's a defective cable and just needs a new one plugged in. And I have several in the cable box in my garage. But I watch so little Freeview that I haven't yet bothered to fix it.

My wireless mouse. It's so great, even with mucking about with rechargeable batteries.

IMO we all owe a huge debt to Nikola Tesla.
(One of the things he predicted that was in the future we would have a pocket device that would allow us to communicate and find out about events worldwide)

In fact corrective lenses in general.
