I am with Rikkitic on this I would tell PB Tech to go fish and I would go elsewhere. I even find their customer facing staff to be terrible with no idea of customer service, I swear a smile must cost extra there. I use them as a last resort. My online buying is done at Ascent and I never had to jump through hoops and get a reference from the ten disciples in order to give the money.

Thank you for the support. It is nice to have at least one poster on my side.

I feel this very strongly and I am amazed to learn it seems to have become standard practice in many places. This is the first time I have banged into it. I am elderly and it makes me think of tropes about old people being out of touch with changes in society and the way things are done. Maybe I am out of touch but if this kind of thing is the new normal, people are putting up with an awful lot of crap they shouldn't have to.

I am in fact looking at Mighty Ape as an alternative, but something went wrong (naturally) with their purchase page and I keep getting looped back. I have sent an email about it.

I feel like I have said my piece and this will probably be my last post on the subject. Anything more is just ranting. Thank you all for listening.

In the last year I have purchased for the first time from a number of NZ and offshore businesses and had never needed to go through what is being described here

Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.

Usually a vendor would just used the authorised merchant verification thing like Visa has. Sometimes when I make a purchase it relays me to the authorisation page for visa where I enter an MFA token, and then back to the vendor page to compete the transaction. I guess PB didn't want to pay for that service and puts the cost onto the buyers time.

That said, it wouldn't irk me enough to write a strongly worded email lol

FIFY

Its common place and as you said you dont make many online transactions so may be a little out of touch with things.

If they didnt do it, and they had fraudulent transactions they would soon run out of banks to use. they are just covering their own ass and their own business.

practices change and its time to just accept it and move on with life and waste your time worrying about things that you can change.

Mighty Ape do something to spit the purchase if a large $ amount, but you simply view the transaction on your online bank statement and enter the code in the description by memory.

They haven't implemented Verified by Visa / MasterCard SecureCode so until that happens you will continue to get this check sometimes.

It's the digital equivalent of checking your receipt as you exit the store. Do you have an issue with that?

Its annoying, but as banks seem to want to wash their hands of problems with card numbers being stolen and their best efforts are that verified by visa turd that encourages bad internet practices, I find the PB Tech way to be much better. Only takes a second to open the app and type the amount in and then they know that you actually have access to see the transactions on that card so are not some person who has just bought the card number off the dark web.

If you want to be angry at someone, it should be the banks for having such a hopeless method of paying online, 20+ years after paypal solved the problem.

I am not angry at anyone any longer. I just had a glass of excellent Pinot Gris and listened to the Kinks 'Sunny Afternoon' in the sunshine, the ultimate chill-out experience.

I was overwhelmed by the PB Tech experience, which was completely new to me and completely unexpected. I still feel outraged by it but I'm not angry (thanks Kinks).

I remain convinced that this is yet another example of an NZ company trying to turn their problem into a problem for their customers, but I guess that is the way some companies just behave here.

Fortunately there are still other companies that don't behave like that. PB Tech is entitled to run their business any way they like. And I am entitled not to spend my money with them. Win-win. I am happy.

I recently had this problem too.

I live in Australia, I still use a NZ credit card.

I ordered an item from a store in Melbourne, and used my NZ Visa card. They said they were going to put a nominal amount under 50cents onto my credit card , and for me to email the amount they took out, so I did. It was 35 cents according to my Visa statement.

They emailed back saying that was not the correct amount and the transaction is cancelled.

So I took a screenshot of my statement and emailed them back. Of course there was a small difference in the amount due to a currency transaction between the countries. I`m sure a few have been caught out with this before.

I then emailed them back asking why this happened. They said as I hadn`t dealt with them before, and in the past I have spent $1000`s there. they said the records only went back to 2016. And they had no email record of me ever shopping there, I promptly sent back one email of a purchase I`d made . Oh Sir a glitch in the system.

They lost a valuable customer that day for good.

I go through this with a number of betting sites I sign up for. My credit card (ANZ) shows the NZD amount immediately but takes a few days to show the FX amount and that is the number they want.

AML stuff with betting sites is all part of the process but some are worse than others. Once I had to take a photo of me holding my passport (open with my photo) to verify my passport as ID.

And ... this is normal? Sorry but I don't care what they are selling. I refuse to jump through these kinds of BS (insert stronger word) hoops. This is just ridiculous. Remember that these site live from your money. Maybe it is time to turn things around.

The AML compliance requirements increased recently, I think Sept/Oct. While some posters may not have experienced anything like this previously, get ready for it to be the new normal.

I think it is grossly unfair to be so critical of PB tech. Sure there might have been a better way of achieving the same outcome but they are just complying with the law. They probably like it even less than you do.

If it is so unfair to PB Tech, why do other sites not also do this? They aren't all the same.

I know NZ has gone off the deep end with money laundering nonsense and similar stuff, but I still have my limits. If PB Tech doesn't want to take my money, I am glad to spend it elsewhere. Fortunately there is still some choice in the world.

I think you need to take a few deep breaths.

Firstly, I have had no issues dealing with this company, and I am assuming you have actually called them?

Secondly, money laundering isnt nonsense, and the newish rules are to protect consumers. I would hate to see you really angry over something important.

Are these other sites from companies based in New Zealand? They might be .co.nz sites but are they actually New Zealand based sites. By not being based here may mean it is easier for them to skirt around these compliance issues.
