When I was wheelchair bound trying to maneuver the chair and hold an umbrella was a skill I never mastered. If the weather was too foul I just didn't go out. I now use a coat but still avoid cold wet days as it causes considerable pain.

My wife has given up on going out on bad days and works from home. Over lockdown she realised that she was way more productive working from home. No down time travelling between meetings and she was able to have far more meetings a day and the meetings were more focused. She recorded he highest quarterly sales results over lockdown and well and truly blitzed her yearly targets.

The lesson herein, avoid the expense of an umbrella, eliminate the hassle and pain of the winter rain stampede, work from home where it is warm and dry and no spiked eyes and get a hell of a lot more work done.

Oh and as a foot note the weather in Te Whanganui-a-Tara today is bollocks.

Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.

They've just put their umbrella in the bin.....

Blunts don't come cheap though...the fold up Metro starts at $99 and they go up from there...

I'm cheap enough to check out op shops. One black umbrella looks like every other umbrella as far as they are concerned. My Blunts both cost me $3 😀. One has Visa branding, obviously with a credit card money is no object.
That's hilarious - the VISA ones were a corporate giveaway back in 2011...I have one.

My Bunnings umbrella is quite possibly my favourite. Good size, strong, waterproof and only cost me $10.

I guess it depends on one's level of pretension, and how much one even wants to be perceived as a 'gentleman'!

I tried using my Blunt Metro for the first time when I was down in Wgtn for work the other week; it was pretty much immediately flipped inside out! I agree that any of the larger Blunt models are simply too wide to be suitable to use on Wellington footpaths, whether or not they stand up to the wind.

No Bunnings umbrella will survive a game of Mess Hockey...

I have had my Brigg since about 1988. We used them to play Mess Hockey in the Halls when I was up at university - they are made from a single piece of wood for the handle and shaft (Hickory in my case) so are very strong. Also useful for setting about miscreants when one is out about town.

Umbrellas are a nuisance on crowded footpaths.

That's only if you don't have the right umbrella.

You can actually get pretty decent umbrellas at non-Blunt prices if you're lucky. Some time ago I found a $29.95 one at Farmers that's pretty damn impressive, double canopy (vented in case of wind gusts) with internal fibreglass bracing and then crossed nylon cords over the bracing as backup. I asked the salesperson about them and she said the supplier had sent someone around to train the sales staff in how to sell them because they're so much better than any generic umbrella. No brand on it unfortunately and never seen ones like that again, but damn is this a well-made umbrella.
