Reporting aside, implementing a paywall with css doesn't give much confidence in what the herald are doing.

This is standard way of implementing a paywall for most mainstream media sites because they still want Google to be able to search their content.

CSS paywalls remind me of the expensive & highly-publicised Copy Control audio CD protection system. Holding the shift key down as you inserted the CD beat that one.

The vast majority of users though will never know the CSS acronym nor what right-clicking can do for them.

For all the Heralds _many_ flaws, I genuinely think it's better than Stuff by a decent margin these days.

I"m of the opposite view. Since the NZ buyout, I think Stuff's content continues to improve and I rate it above NZ Herald.

So much so, I've opted in to a monthly payment to continue to support them.

Good on you for putting your money where your mouth is, but I won't be doing the same since they have given up any pretence of being impartial. The only paper I've given any serious thought to donating to is The Guardian, which isn't perfect but does a better of job of being impartial than anything else I've read in the last few years.
