Hi all

I don't have access to premium on nzherald but from the small amount i can see it seems like a lot of the "premium news" stories are just a copy and paste from other free news sites.

Example

https://www.nzherald.co.nz/world/trump-has-discussed-with-advisers-pardons-for-his-three-eldest-children-and-giuliani/J5N3TE56Z2DZK27VK4SQPYK2KY/

Copied from

https://www.nytimes.com/2020/12/01/us/politics/rudy-giuliani-pardon.html

If this is the case isn't this just a bit of a p*ss take from NZHerald?

they likely have a sharing agreement, not all NYT content is free, they only give you so much.

Wasn't that one of their selling points when they went subscription based. Access to all NZ Herald premium content plus content from partner sites?

Which i don't have an issue with but putting it behind a pay wall when it's available to view online in full is another story.  I would a little bit mad if i signed up to read a story only to find out its the same story from another site that i could have seen for free.

Anyway my 2 cents.

The NYT is not a free site - it has a paywall and restrictions on free articles.

The whole point of the premium was to aggregate a lot of high quality content from paywalled news sites from around the world.. but it's hard to find it between all the news.com.au clickbait on their site.

Does anyone know if you can cancel the nz herald premium online now? I would sign up for it now and then if I knew I didn't have to ring them to cancel it and be interrogated

I just Google the headlines for any Premium stories I want to see, and it takes me to the parent site I can read it from.

So, do they just copy and paste? Yes.

Reporting aside, implementing a paywall with css doesn't give much confidence in what the herald are doing.

This newspaper tried cut and paste to gain traffic! You won’t believe what happened!

For all the Heralds _many_ flaws, I genuinely think it's better than Stuff by a decent margin these days.

https://www.nzherald.co.nz/world/covid-19-coronavirus-facebook-says-it-will-remove-vaccine-misinformation/SCF5OWBSRSGLUMDXHR7OVAFJ4M/ source - NYT

Radio NZ has done the same, with same article. But via BBC (and a little reworded)

https://www.rnz.co.nz/news/covid-19/432091/facebook-to-take-down-false-covid-19-vaccine-claims

So yep. Google the opening phrases, normally not paywall stuff. Just a consolidator.

No, you can't cancel online. You also can't cancel by email, I tried, and they sent an email back saying that I had to ring up to cancel. This was despite their page saying:

"Digital subscriptions renew automatically. To make any changes to your subscription please call us on 0800 100 888 or email subscriptions@nzherald.co.nz and our team will be pleased to assist you"

I'm not quite sure what other changes I can make to my subscription outside of cancelling. But when I called they at least answered the phone promptly, and offered 12 weeks for $1 / week, which is close to the black friday deal, but not quite as good.
