Would be interesting to know if they just tested a single fridge, did they contact Smeg to check it for faults, etc.

Smeg is a high end manufacturer, so would not expect them to produce a fridge with the issues found.

"Smeg" is just too close for comfort to the word "smegma".

Stuff article picture has an EE sticker with two star rating. Still legal I guess. Small? Looks eight foot tall in that pic.

You don't just by a Smeg fridge and chuck it in a bog standard, un-styled kitchen.

And I think it would be remiss to think anyone is using these as their primary fridge - they just aren't big enough.

FAB38RCRAU is not exactly a small fridge:

- Height (cm) 205
- Width (cm) 71
- Depth (cm) 78

How big is yours? ; )

Are they though? Or are they more about style than function. Just because they make cool looking expensive stuff doesn't mean it's particularly good quality.

The mark-up on those fridges as soon as they enter the NZ border is astonishing, by the way.

SMEG isn’t a high-end manufacturer at all. It is a pretty small family-owned business, with only four factories. Small in global terms. Small of course doesn’t mean not good, but I think if you talk to owners and repairers, they don’t have a good reputation generally.

Personally I would never purchase Smeg. Gaggenau and Miele are examples of high-end.

The "faux" retro style has almost gone full cycle - Smeg's been making those retro fridges since the '90s, so I guess if you saw one you'd have to ask if it's modern retro or genuinely old retro.

robjg63: Could it be that they tested a faulty one?
Sounds broken to me.
Lack of useful info in the article IMHO.

That was my initial reaction to the article was that perhaps they got a faulty unit or it hadn't been handled properly during transit etc leading to the terrible performance.

There is plenty of euro origin stuff sold in NZ with a snob factor markup and at the same time is hilariously common average joe in Europe.

And vice versa. Some of the bigger Carrefours in France have polished wooden cases displaying exotic teas you can buy in lots of ten teabags or so. The brand? Dilmah.

@qwertee:

I must sheepishly confess that we have a SMEG kettle and toaster that we quite like.

But NO  not the retro fridge that we never liked

cheers

They are a nice looking toaster and kettle, I'm quite smitten with the design and colour options. How's the performance of it as a toaster? Any good, or is it like this fridge - all form and no function?

We've got the toaster (4 slice) and kettle. The toast rockets up so fast when done it often ends up on the bench next to the toaster :D

Ahh - the NASA design, SpaceX toasters are better, sometimes...

Consumer NZ just got the same results on one they tested. They actually got the exact same score so I checked that it wasn't the same review, but it's by a different person and contains different text, so it looks like two independent assessments produced the same result. It looks like it really is that bad.
