I see All star shoes have now made a Vegan leather... I didn't think a vegans skin would be suitable... I really hope they aren't wasting the meat from these grass fed vegans :)

I'm not a complete idiot, I still have some parts missing.

Dear PETA,

I am a committed vegetarian and I think you people are bloody morons if this kind of ridiculous PC nonsense is an example of your thinking. Maybe you should have some mouse meat to get your brains back in order.

Even if the mice could be collected, which they cannot, where would you put them? How would you feed them, if not from the farmers' crops? And don't forget they breed at a rate that puts even the most sex-crazed bunnies to shame.

In any case mice plagues, just like Australian fly swarms, are a direct consequence of the imbalances created by human activity. The way to have fewer mice is to have fewer people. Perhaps you could serve humanity by volunteering to be the first to go.

But don't worry. Nature will find a way. All those yummy mice mean a plague of snakes will be next. I hope some find their ways into your beds.

But PETA, mice eat other animals who will have to die. Can we send them to you to teach them to eat vegetables. Thanks

They are nothing short of a cult.

Lazy is such an ugly word, I prefer to call it selective participation

Some of the stuff PETA comes out with is just unbelievable.

Oh I don't know, I always thought People Eating Tasty Animals was a cause worth supporting...

Handsomedan:

I recall reading (but cannot find a source at the moment) that PETA have been involved in killing animals themselves in order to get a point across.

It's not to get a point across, it's because they operate animal shelters in the US but they're not no-kill. PETA kill more pets than most people would believe.

Edited to add: Here's one story on this, from the WaPo:

that same facility also euthanized more than 80 percent of the animals in its care last year, a rate so shockingly high that Virginia lawmakers passed a bill in February — nearly unanimously — to define a private animal shelter as a place where the primary mission is to find permanent homes for animals in this life, not send them on to the next. The bill, its sponsor made clear, is designed to protect animals and rein in PETA.

So in this case it's not People Eating Tasty Animals, it's People Euthanising Tame Animals.

No doubt the lawmakers were as unanimous as responses in this topic. In the US context one of the things PETA does is provide vetinary care for pets owned by poor people. This is going to lead to a lot of end of life care. I really doubt PETA is perfect in every way but I think there's more behind the stats than is immediately obvious.

This (mostly) isn't end of life care, it's because they euthanise pets when their shelters are full. It's end-of-life care in a way, but it's PETA that's ensuring that the lives end.

In particular they're complaining about getting rid of highly destructive vermin most of whom will die anyway because that level of population isn't sustainable, but then they kill pets in their own animal shelters.

It's hard to see from the information available if the stats are high because in some areas PETA offers a free euthanasia service to owners who would otherwise do something different, or if stats are high because PETA has low capacity for care compared to other animal shelters. There are some indications PETA accepts animals turned away from other shelters and this will also complicate stats comparisons.

Yeah, it's a complicated topic, and you have to be careful googling it to avoid random anti-PETA blogs and the like. The New York Times and Newsweek offer some more balanced coverage.

I remember seeing an ad that PETA (or a similar group) that was on TV in the 1980s - right in the middle of the afternoon kids shows on TV1! Must say this was quite jarring for a young kid to see...

It was stuck in my head for a long time afterwards, so was obviously effective...just not sure if I was the target audience they were aiming for.

Same PETA spokesperson interviewed by Yahoo News yesterday:

Yahoo News: “Clearly we understand what’s going to happen to these mice and what is already happening and what needs to happen to resolve this issue,” she said. “They shouldn’t be left to run around and destroy crops at the detriment of the mental health and lives of farmers.”

The original headlines and quotes were somewhat misleading. Nobody should really be surprised by that. Earlier when looking for an update I googled the name of the spokesperson. It looks like the recent brouhaha may have led to the creation of some stalky looking pages.

I was thinking earlier that it may also have been an attempt to anchor one end of the Overton window at an extreme, when what they were really aiming for was something far less extreme that now seems reasonable and near the centre.
