This article shows are far removed from reality some people are.

Telling farmers who are being over run by an army of mice and are are losing their livelihood to catch and release these mice elsewhere is just insane. These people from PETA are not going to go hungry or lose their livelihood, have no idea of the devastation the mice are causing, yet with their holier than thou attitude offer obscene suggestions like this.

Thankfully they have been told the pull their heads in, but to even think someone would even make such suggestions to start with beggars belief.

Some of the stuff PETA comes out with is just unbelievable. I honestly would think they are taking the mickey but sadly I know better.

Naxakis suggested instead of poisoning the “innocent” rodents, farmers should set up humane traps to gently catch and release the mice unharmed.

It would be inhumane to let them starve, so probably the appropriate thing is to set up mouse rest homes where the mice get fed & watered, with enrichment activities provided, until they die of old age. Would it be more objectionable to inject each mouse with contraceptives or to separate them into male & female rest homes? I mean, you wouldn't want to assume a mouse's gender.

So if a plauge is defined as 1,000 mice per ha, and the average Australian farm is 4,300 ha, and there are 17,700 farms just in Queensland, where does PETA propose Queensland farmers relocate ~76 billion mice?

It's a bit like SAFE. They're quoted so often in media, but quite simply will never be content until humans don't farm animals or kill them to eat.

Agreed but does anyone really take Stuff seriously? The content passed off as news is inaccurate, generally unsourced and written by part time "reporters".

I put Stuff in the same category as Woman's Weekly.

They really should stop the evil animals eating other animals. So cruel. Best they start with converting all carnivores and omnivores to vegans.

Reminds me of the NZ Geographic piece highlighted by the Spinoff today about the feral wallaby problem, where rather than killing the wallabies, farmers just moved them on:

”The government set up the South Canterbury Wallaby Board to tackle the problem. Employing a dedicated team that went farm to farm, killing wallabies with poison and shooting, the board succeeded where the cullers had failed. For more than a decade, wallabies were held at very low numbers. When the board’s government funding was cut in 1989, farmers baulked at covering the cost—people with fewer wallabies on their land resented subsidising those with more. In any case, numbers by this time were so low that the animals no longer seemed like a threat.

So, in 1992, the Wallaby Board was scrapped in favour of a user-pays system. A 900,000-hectare containment zone between the Waitaki and Rangitata rivers was established, and farmers within it would be required to control wallabies on their land—or face penalties. The problem: some farmers were more motivated than others. And some “controlled” the animals by chasing them onto neighbouring land. “We were telling [farmers] they had to reduce the population,” says Brent Glentworth, the biosecurity team leader from Environment Canterbury (ECan), the regional council. “And we explained to them that poison is the best option to do that. But it would often be cheaper for them to move the wallabies rather than to bait them. We were chasing our tail trying to get farmers coordinated.”

I recall reading (but cannot find a source at the moment) that PETA have been involved in killing animals themselves in order to get a point across.

If I can find a reliable source I'll post it.

They are out of touch though...like any evangelist, they only see their side and only form a very narrow standpoint. The wider view is someone else's problem and not to be mentioned.

At least that's a semi-achievable goal.

Relocating mice is just going to spread the plague further.

Seems like a good case for a targeted rate to be applied. I live in urban Christchurch and even I have to pay a targeted rate for pest control.
