Didn't they used to have a shop in Dunedin?

Yeap, I could be wrong but I think it became Cello Tech

Yep you're right, it was on the corner of Hillside and Andy Bay, then Cello Tech moved opposite to what was the Cadbury Factory.

Are they PB Tech just with a different name? Or did they exit the city entirely?
A cousin of mine there is looking to purchase some parts and asked me who I would recommend.

I'm excited for sure, but my worry is that the site they have chosen doesn't exactly have a good track record with longevity.  I've lost count of the number of businesses that have tried to make it work there.

PB are quite agile, their store in Henderson[west Auckland] was a loss leader so they converted it into a click and collect store, worked out quite well for them.

Could see if being a bit of a distribution hub for that part of the country as well

I would expect that PB Tech is a destination store that customers go to because that's where they have to go to get whatever they want, rather than depending on pedestrians passing by for their trade.

So unless access is terrible and/or parking impossible, location is less important than it would be for other sorts of businesses

Whereabouts is it going?

@DamageInc: refer to my original post: in the “recently closed fruit and vege shop in Rangitikei St”.

This may help if you’re not sure where that was: https://goo.gl/maps/hK5VuPtantJzproy7

Sweet as thanks, cant wait.

I'm looking forward to the new Petone store, I avoid the Wellington City one as the parking there is a nightmare.

As a regular visitor to Wellington, I have a pilgrimage I make on many such trips - park in Moore Wilson’s, visit the store (best shop in Wellington!), plus make a dash through Nood to PB Tech. Will be good to not have to do this now the PN store is so close to opening.

Will Harvey Normal Electronics and Noel Leeming survive the competition of PB Tech?

I always find that no Kiwi retailer beats PB Tech on prices, especially Apple products and that the customer reps. truly understand the products they sell.

You do not seem to be looking around as much as you should then, as I have fairly often found other shops with better prices for specific items.  You should at least check pricespy.co.nz before buying from PB Tech.  Also remember with web shopping that some shops have free shipping in the price (Ascent.co.nz, for example), so when comparing properly you can find that the PB Tech shipping cost added on at the end makes it actually more expensive than the shipping included price elsewhere.  Also, if you want to use a credit card, PB Tech charges a percentage extra for that, where several other shops do not.

Agree with this. Some of the stores in Auckland e.g. Penrose are in the middle of industrial areas and have piss poor parking. Others, such as the Wellington CBD store have even worse parking and aren't exactly in Lambton Quay or Courtenay Place in terms of foot traffic.

It should be just fine where it is, and I'm pleased to see 'em finally coming to Palmy, being slightly miffed there has been a store in New Plymouth for a few years, which is smaller :)

Does Palmy have pedestrians? By the time you've done the length of Tremaine and back to the Square you've used 1/4 tank of petrol.

I agree, I think this is a specialist store where the volume of general foot traffic won’t be a determinant of its success, especially given the lack of any real competition in the city.

Something I didn’t know until I finally made it that one time into the vege shop previously on that site is there’s an ok sized car park behind the building, accessible from Wellesbourne St.

Yeah, that's the crux of it: by the time you add the shipping and CC fees, I find it really neuters a lot of their prices, even specials. Paradigm PCs is another one offering competitive prices with free shipping, although they still wack on a 3% CC charge.

At least with the PN PB Tech opening, it will actually be a novel experience to walk into a physical store and exchange money for goods on the day, since I have only ever bought PC parts on-line.

Looks like PC parts are back on the menu, GZers!

PB Tech Palmy is opening today, right now in fact!
