This may well be old news to those in the know, but I'll admit to being surprised but stoked when last weekend I came across PB Tech branding on the recently closed fruit and vege shop in Rangitikei St.

The PB Tech website says it'll open in early Aug, - can't be soon enough for me, as the range and prices in PN suck and, given I already get a lot of the stuff I order from them anyway, it'll be nice to save on postage.

My daughter who lives in Palmy mentioned this the other day, I said at the time I suspected it would shake things up a bit in the local market as I suspected what you just alluded to about the local range and pricing being .. sub optimal..

Good news. Would be good if they opened one in Dunedin as well - more people there than in Palmerston North too.

Yea it's going to be handy!!

JB was the only real option for standard stuff (TVs, laptops etc). And Jaycar was the only other option for things like random cable adpaters and stuff - at their horrendous markup.

Yes, and it rebranded many years ago.

I believe it was similar to the Wellington store used to be at it's old Vivian St location - basically a franchise type operation, whereas now the stores are all company owned.

Good news.

If you're very lucky , they MIGHT have a sale . And give you almost the same prices as normal retail during that sale
:-)

I'm excited for sure, but my worry is that the site they have chosen doesn't exactly have a good track record with longevity.  I've lost count of the number of businesses that have tried to make it work there.

For my part, I will do whatever I can (within my budget) to make it successful.  We are not well served in Palmy for PC parts beyond a few boutique computer repair places.  If nothing else, it gives me another place to browse, which I enjoy doing.  Back in the day, Dick Smith's was a fun place to kill half an hour on a weekend, looking at different gadgets and planning what I might spend future money on.

@DamageInc: refer to my original post: in the “recently closed fruit and vege shop in Rangitikei St”.

This may help if you’re not sure where that was: https://goo.gl/maps/hK5VuPtantJzproy7
