I wonder what the world would be like if the attacks never happened? No Afghanistan or Iraq wars. No ISIS? something else awful would have happened I'm sure.

I'm sure the Americans would've found someone else to liberate. Those smart bombs won't sell themselves, you know.

Yeah, 20 years later we still remove our shoes because some idiot had a dumb idea about shoe bombs that didn't work, but try to get people to wear a face mask at the supermarket and their human rights are being torn to shreds.

Well, people aren't offered a choice about the shoes and belt thing. If we did the same around masks, we could have everyone wearing masks.

I was driving through rural Norfolk on the way back from a meeting when the news broke.

Since then, I met and married my wife, accidentally moved to New Zealand, lost my father and numerous other smaller things.

Also seen life get harder when traveling as part of the increasingly complex web of "improvements" that modern life has created that make it harder and less pleasant rather than the easier I imagined it would become.

Yes they are, sort of.

It's very variable as to whether you get made to do it or not - at least outside the USA.

The last 20 years as a highlight reel...

We've been in the same house, stayed married, I lost my hair, we had kids, got a dog, kids grew up into teenagers, I got a bad injury playing football and had to give that up, have had a couple of minor mental health struggles, a pandemic turned up and I have had about 300 jobs in that time since 9/11.

So overall, not a lot.

I am 100% older, have degrees, a house, am engaged, popped a sprog and my best friends are the same four or five people with a few extra ones added in.

In short, my life is exactly where I thought it would be, but I'm about six years behind in terms of progress because of housing costs and career setbacks, so roughly 35% of the ensuing time has largely been a waste, whereas if I was six years older a tonne of this stuff would have been cheaper and easier and I'd be that much ahead.
