We went to one in Christchurch around Christmas. Friendly, helpful, bland food that cost more than it should given the level of quality.
Went to the Porirua one after it opened. Plenty of nostalgia and much nicer than Valentines ever was. Price was higher than any fast food place but roughly on par with other similar places (e.g. Breakers, Fishermans Table etc) from memory.

I've visited a few in recent years and been totally underwhelmed every time. Visited Taupo in January during the holidays and went there for dinner as a few other nearby places were all full, and the food was pretty meg (certainly edible, but nothing amazing) I thought their pricing was very high for a family themed restaurant.

Valentine's is another one whose outlet numbers have also declined in recent years -only 3 left now, according to their website (although there are actually 5, by the looks - just the Auckland ones aren't listed right now). I remember they used to be all over the place.
I last (tried) visiting there in 2005, I recall prices of $30 per person for all you can eat - but for the amount of food the 3 people in my party would have eaten, it wasn't really good value for money; from memory we didn't eat there that night.
We went to one in 2019. It ... it wasn't great, to be honest. But the niece had fun for her birthday so that's the important thing.

alavaliant: Meant to go to the one in Rotorua last time I was there but it didn't work out timing wise.
Someone from work went there a couple of months ago, and she said it's nowhere near as good as it used to be. Seems to be a common theme with chain restaurants!
Back in the early 80's used to go to one on Auckland Nth Shore somewhere. Loved the hot Cobb bread, the steak & chips and their huge, in a stemmed glass desserts. In fact we found these glasses at the PSA store, downtown Auckland, and bought six. Still have them and use them. Great for individual trifle and all manner of layered desserts. They hold 750ml.
Whilst the difficult we can do immediately, the impossible takes a bit longer. However, miracles you will have to wait for.

I was told similar things about the one in Petone before it closed but I still quite enjoyed going there. So I suspect I would still quite enjoy going to the Rotorua one.
To be fair, despite the comments in this thread, my last few trips to Cobb & Co were enjoyable! But I haven't been in a year or so, despite there being one about a km from my house...
I ate there when I was a child and have really fond memories of it. Favourite was the cobb bread, and of course the fancy kids drinks. According to my parents it was reasonably priced too so good for families to go.
What would be the equivalent around now that's family friendly and affordable?
I took the kids to the Taupo restaurant 2 years ago, it was great for nostalgia - I got Cobb crunchies and the kids had crocodile sundaes. I had steak, it was fine, nothing special. My parents used to take us to the Upper Hutt one back in the 1980s and I always got a traffic light and cobb crunchies. There was a games room with a couple of spacie machines, big open fire, lots of wagon wheels. Good times!
I used to like getting a traffic light when I was a kid... and doing the connect-the-dots on the back of the table mat :)
