So says The Spinoff today:

https://thespinoff.co.nz/food/19-09-2021/is-it-time-for-a-cobb-comeback/

https://www.stuff.co.nz/business/industries/85065824/cobb--co-planning-a-comeback-with-up-to-30-new-restaurants

My local was (what was) Revingtons in Greymouth in the mid 1980s, but they've mostly disappeared in recent years. Last time I ate at one was the Poenamo Hotel in 2004. Both are now gone.

What was your local one, and what memories do you have? Can they make a comeback in this day and age? The food is still (apparently) quite good - I remember really enjoying the schnitzel there.

Never knew they had gone..... not for any length of time anyway. One popped up in Manukau (again) years ago, and Rotorua has had one for a number of years.

We visited the Rotorua one, was disappointed - seating was extremely cramped in the booths (literally had no room between you and the table) and food was average. Sure, had the name and the menu but not done to the standard it used to be.

There has been one in Taupo for a few years now, well at least it was there earlier in the year (February/March)

And I know of another in Porirua.

www.cobb.co.nz shows a number of them, all seem to be south of Rotorua (Manukau obviously closed)

I was told there is a new one in Christchurch.

I went to the Taupo store last year and Rotorua a few years ago. The food was still good. Manukau hung around for a long time before being rebranded as "Broken Spokes" with a similar menu, although it didn't maintain the same quality and the place was always empty when we visited.

I think they'd still do well, particularly in areas like Manukau if they continue to provide good food at a reasonable price. The choices in the area are poor with the new Woodside bar on the Manukau site being over-priced IMO and Denny's (with a similar style of food) has priced themselves out of the market somewhat. Denny's may still be cheaper than the competition, but the food is nowhere near the quality it should be for the prices they are charging.

The one in Kamo (Whangarei) at the lights was the standard go-to when we were kids and mum and dad wanted an evening out with the family. I agree, the schnitzel was great.

For sure, but there used to be almost 40 of them around the country at their peak, now there are 8. So in a lot of locations (Auckland and Nelson, for example) there hasn't been one for years.

When I hear Cobb & Co. mentioned, all I think of is days old, overcooked food, festering away in the bain-marie.

I think I'll pass.

Hence why I say apparently :D I remember it being good, and was going off the review above - but things can change.

Ate at the one in New Plymouth earlier this year. Food was quite okay. Main issue was an extremely noisy family celebration of some 50 plus people in the function room adjacent to the restaurant.

Valentine's is another one whose outlet numbers have also declined in recent years -only 3 left now, according to their website (although there are actually 5, by the looks - just the Auckland ones aren't listed right now). I remember they used to be all over the place.

I last (tried) visiting there in 2005, I recall prices of $30 per person for all you can eat - but for the amount of food the 3 people in my party would have eaten, it wasn't really good value for money; from memory we didn't eat there that night.
