I can't quite get over how generous this is. Some people just hit the jackpot.

People working minimum wage jobs in a variety of industries (petrol station retail etc), will get residency, be able to attach family etc...

I think the target we had for giving skilled / business migrant residency was about 40k per year. We are going to do about 4x that in one year...

I'm sure somebody did the Math from the Labour Party. Cost to Benefit Analysis on their chance to stir this into a win in the next election.

They know they'll lose votes who are unconsciously xenophobic. But this will really cement their caring and kind approach on pressing national matters.

They also know the next stage for this 165,000 migrants once they get their residency is buying their own homes and having the capability to vote, so guess who will they vote.

We know our situation with our housing, they are owned by 64% of Kiwis who can deliver block voting when they are in the state of euphoria.

Guess again who they will likely vote.

Great way to also push house prices even higher, with the limited supply. People who were in limbo can now buy.

without being prejudiced or any-phobic, purely stating factually -

i know a few people who are all waiting to get residency to buy a house as soon as they get their residency. now i am not nosy enough to go dig around and find out if they are getting their ticket with this one time offer.

Honestly, the vibes in the migrant groups is this was all down to Erica Sanford piling on the pressure and not letting it go until something was done. She has been incredibly supportive to all these people and really pushed labour in to this decision. Considering the stress and uncertainty labour caused I'd say a significant number of them will vote national.

Numbers wise, it is far more than they would usually allow, but in the current situation considering migrants coming in on work visas is reduced to only critical workers this is more to stop negative migration numbers and an exodus of thousands of people leaving a huge gap in skilled occupations. You only have to look at the UK right now to see the impact of kicking out all the migrants had there, it's such a balancing act to get right but covid turning the tap off has really accelerated showing up the impact of not being able to bring in any international talent at all which was where alt of countries were heading towards.

Divhon88:...did the Math from the Labour Party...

Question: Is there any money left in the till?

Answer Yes. Do it.

Answer No. Do it and get the taxpayer to pay.

What they don't understand is

  1. Immigrants help grow New Zealand.
  2. The taxpayer provides the money the government spends... there is no 'money tree'.

Erica will definitely get her votes but that’s only good for her unless she becomes the leader of National party.

She could be the Dark Horse to counter the PM she has the pleasing personality, charisma, articulation that could go toe to toe against Jacinda. She is the rebranding National needs and the best responce when Labour made the switch from Andrew.

It has been proven that migrants bring huge value. They import themselves here educated, healthy, and ready to be productive

And the NZ housing civil war has just begun. I thought it was bad enough, well they were honest that it will get worse first before it gets better.

A lot of people on temporary work visas were living in a flatting situation, often to save costs and because they didn't have their families here. They will now want their own houses......

House prices are going to continue to grow for some time yet. But with inflation growing too expect to see higher interest rates alongside it.....
